Thatch Safe Intumescent paint for Thatch and Bamboo. This product stands as the sole ASTM CLASS A, UL Type 1 fire retardant coating crafted specifically for thatch substrates. It complies with the rigorous ASTM E84 Standard Test Method for Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials, along with ASTM E2898 (ASTM E108 Accelerated Weathering Procedure), NFPA 255, UL723, UBC 8-1, NFPA 701, and more. Designed as a high-intumescent fire retardant coating, THATCH SAFE effectively retards fire on all interior and exterior thatching substrates, including Mexican Palm Thatch, African Thatch Reed, bamboo, koa, cypress, Tahitian palm thatch, and others.

Preferred by Tiki bars, restaurants, and Tiki Huts for meeting fire code compliance, THATCH SAFE is the exclusive product listed for thatch substrates by the State of California Office of the State Fire Marshall (Cal Fire). Based on the ASTM E84 Test Method, test results from Intertek Laboratories reveal a Flame Spread rating of 0.0 (the lowest possible) and a Smoke Development Index of 85 (well below the standard of 450). In fact, the Flame Spread never extended to the end of the 24' long THATCH SAFE treated test specimen.

Moreover, THATCH SAFE functions as a sealer, mold and mildew inhibitor, and insect repellent. It can be applied using a spray, brush, or roller. Initially milky-colored in its liquid state, it dries clear with a semi-gloss finish, gradually transitioning to the natural matte finish of the thatch.

APPLICATION:

  • Treat before, during, or after construction.
  • Ensure the surface is clean and dry before treatment.
  • Apply with an 80 psi or greater sprayer, positioned 8 to 12 inches from the surface. Begin at the top, holding the sprayer at an upward angle to the roof pitch to allow for spraying under the ends of the thatching. Alternatively, apply with a brush or roller.
  • Treat all exposed surfaces wherever possible.
  • Avoid exposing the treated area to moisture for 24 hours.

COVERAGE:
THATCH SAFE ensures comprehensive protection with a 175 to 200 sq. ft. per gallon coverage rate.
For both exterior and interior use. An exterior application can endure three to five years, contingent on rainfall while maintaining a flame spread index of less than 25. In harsh weather conditions, it may be necessary to recoat Thatch roofs and exterior walls every three years.
