Heat Stop 50 is the ideal high-temperature refractory mortar solution. This product is great for clay flue linings, laying firebricks, masonry ovens, interior and exterior chimneys, and fireplace applications.

This 50-pound pail of dry compound is mixed with water to create 60 lbs of mortar that will lay up to 100x 2-1/2" thick bricks with joints of 1/16 to 1/8" thick, and can accommodate joints up to 1/2" thick.

Also available in 50 lb. wet premix pail that is ready to install. 

This refractory mortar meets ASTC C-199, ASTM C-1283, & ASTM E-136 standards along with the NFPA-211 residential building code.

Handles extremely high temps, more than 2,000 degrees.

Once Heat Stop has been Installed, how long doe I need to wait before applying heat? 

It's best to wait one day after the masonry is installed in a chimney or fireplace for a firebrick or clay flue lining before applying heat.

What is the best Heat Stop solution for joints in clay flue lining and firebrick?

The Heat Stop ii and Heat Stop 50 products are the best refractory mortar products for installing clay flue lining and firebrick because they are completely non-water soluble in service after the initial set. They have an indefinite shelf life, and excellent drying characteristics no matter the humidity. These products are specified by NFPA-211 (National Fire Protection Association), in addition to meeting all local, regional and national building codes.

What ASTM specs and building codes are in place for fireplace and chimney construction?

Building codes require refractory products that meet ASTM C-199 (medium duty) for fireplace and chimney construction. All Heat Stop products (including the castable products Insul Stick, Insul Cast and Heat Cast 40) meet or exceed this ASTM C-199 (medium duty) requirement. Firebrick must meet the ASTM C-27 requirement, and clay flue lining must meet the ASTM C-315 and ASTM C-1283 requirements. ASTM C-105 is a discontinued specification for fireclay and should NOT be used in fireplace and chimney construction. Fireclay mixes with regular mortar do not meet current building codes.

What is the ideal thickness for joints when using Heat Stop refractory mortar?

It is recommended to apply between 1/16" and 1/8" thick joint for all of the Heat Stop refractory products. Should a thicker joint be required then its best to use the Heat Stop ii or Heat Stop 50 dry mix rather than the wet premix product. It taxes approximately 50 lbs. of product to lay 100 firebrick.
