Flame Stop ii Fire Retardant for Wood 5 Gal

$418.22
SKU FSii

Flame Stop ii is the ideal fire retardant treatment for porous woods, lumber, decking, and cedar shake shingles. It provides a self-extinguishing reaction when a treated material meets an open flame.

This water-based Class A one-coat solution is applied post-treatment and is non-combustible, non-carcinogenic, and super easy to apply on unsealed wood.

Flame Stop contains no PBDEs and is useful for indoor and outdoor applications.  It is biodegradable and enables good resistance against harmful pests such as insects and rodents. Because of the added mold and mildew inhibitors, this is effective against mold growth, including black mold.

Tested ASTM E-84, NFPA 255, UL 723 have provided a "Class A" Flame Spread index of 25. This is the best possible rating awarded to fire-retardant building products like concrete.

Flame Stop ii Coverage Rates & Application Tips

Flame Stop II is a Class A, one-coat system that has a Flame Spread rating of 25 and a Smoke Developed rating of 25 when tested on Douglas fir. It penetrates and forms a molecular bond with the substrate, making the flame retardation indefinite for most interior applications.

For exterior use, it is recommended to reapply Flame Stop II after five years. It will not alter the structural integrity of wood like pressure treatment can, and is preferred because it functions as a wood preservative, dries clear, is easy to apply by spraying, immersing, brushing, or rolling, and contains mold and mildew inhibitors that are effective against black mold. Once cured for 48 hours, the treated material can be painted with most latex-based paints.

  • Coverage Rates: 125 sq ft/gallon 625 sq ft/5 gallon pail
  • Ideal use: Exterior and interior woods including: porous woods, cedar shake shingles, decking, and structural lumber
  • Application Methods: Can be rolled, brushed, sprayed, or immersed
  • Storage: Shelf life 1 year, keep in cool dry place 45-110* F
  • Curing: allow 48 hours curing for a single coat, test only after cure is finished
  • For Spray Application: use airless low-pressure applicator along with a .012 size spray nozzle

To attain the desired fire rating, it is crucial to apply Flame Stop products at the recommended coverage rate per square foot per gallon. If you have a significant amount of product remaining after the project is completed, it is likely that the recommended coverage rate was not followed. Therefore, it is important to carefully measure before ordering to make sure the correct amount of product is purchased.

Please be aware that due to product liability issues, Flame Stop products are non-returnable unless defective.

Flame Stop for interior and exterior applications

Flame Stop ii can be used for both interior and exterior uses. The ideal use for this product is porous wood where the liquid can penetrate and then create a protective coating making the wood surface water proof. This new coating inhibits mold and mildew and will help preserve the wood as a beneficial bi-product.

If your goal is to apply a fire retardant to other materials besides wood such as fabric or clothing, or if you would like to enhance your latex paint so that it has flame retardant properties then take a look at the following products instead as they specifically address these use cases:

Protect Life & Property with a Class A Fire Rated Protectant

Most of us don't regularly consider the extent of damage that fire can do to a home or belongings inside if left unchecked.

Each year there are more than 2 million fires reported in the U.S. and these fires do on average ten billion dollars worth of damage due to flame, smoke, and thermal damage.  Of the homes fires that were reported 44% of those had non-functioning smoke alarms.  Of the home fires that resulted in being fatal 14% of them working smoke detectors in the home.

Fires can spread very fast and double every 30 seconds if left unchecked. That's why using a product like Flame Stop ii that has Class A fire rating that can reduce the flame spread or even stop it entirely is so valuable. The additional time provided in a home or business fire could make the difference in enabling residents to evacuate and to save the property.

Flame Stop Fire Stats

Why is a Class A Fire Rating Important?

Having a class A fire rating means that a building material or product has been tested and found to have a high level of resistance to fire. Class A materials are generally able to withstand prolonged exposure to high heat and flames without burning or significantly contributing to the spread of fire. This rating is often used for building materials that are intended for use in buildings that are occupied by large numbers of people, such as schools, hospitals, and office buildings.

Class A materials are typically made from non-combustible materials or materials that are treated with fire retardants to reduce their flammability. In order to achieve a Class A rating, a material must be tested according to the relevant standards and regulations, and must meet certain performance criteria. These criteria may include measures of the material's flame spread, smoke development, and structural stability under fire conditions.

In general, having a Class A fire rating is an important consideration when choosing an appropriate fire retardant product. This will help to ensure the safety of the occupants of a building in the event of a fire.

A few common wood applications

The Flame Stop Advantage

Flame Stop ii is made in the USA. This product is painted or sprayed on wood using low pressure spraying equipment and is effective with a single coat making it much more economical than other products that can require 2-3 coats from a high-pressure spray system. The intumescent paint is shipped ready to use without any mixing or additional work.

The goal of Flame Stopp is to slow the spread of a fire and ideally have the flames self-extinguish. This slowing of flame spread buys more time for a buildings inhabitant to leave a building or residence and provides the fire department more time to arrive saving lives and property.

Ideal Flame Stop ii Applications:

A few of the more common places you can find the Flame Stop product used are residential homes, restaurants, churches, assisted-living and convalescent homes, schools, cruise ships, commercial construction projects, apartment complexes, vacation properties and amusement parks.

Another advantage of using Flame Stop is that it does NOT contain any bromides or formaldehyde in its formulation. flame retardants and intumescent paint products shouldn't need to be created with toxic chemicals in order to be effective. Check the chemicals of other products to be be sure you know exactly what your applying to on your project.
