Thermaline 450 by Carboline is a two-component, glass-flake-filled epoxy novolac coating designed for high-performance protection in extreme environments. It offers excellent resistance to corrosion, abrasion, chemicals, and wet/dry cycling up to 450°F (232°C), making it ideal for both insulated and uninsulated steel and stainless steel surfaces.

What It’s Meant For:
Thermaline 450 protects against corrosion under insulation (CUI) and severe chemical exposure, per NACE SP0198 systems CS-1, CS-3, CS-4, SS-1, SS-2, and SS-3. Its novolac formulation and glass-flake reinforcement ensure durability on pipes, stacks, and equipment under thermal cycling and harsh conditions.

Common Industry Applications:

Petrochemical: Protects pipelines, reactors, and storage tanks exposed to corrosive chemicals and high temperatures.
Oil & Gas: Coats insulated and uninsulated pipes and equipment in refineries and offshore platforms.
Power Generation: Applied to stacks and equipment in power plants subjected to thermal cycling.
Pulp & Paper: Used on processing equipment exposed to corrosive environments and high temperatures.
Metals & Mining: Protects steel structures and equipment from abrasion and chemical attack in harsh mining conditions.
Marine: Suitable for offshore structures and marine equipment exposed to salt water and thermal stress.

This Coating is typically applied over properly prepared steel or stainless steel surfaces and may be used with Carbozinc inorganic zinc primers for enhanced corrosion protection.

Thermaline 450 is a self-priming CUI epoxy — no separate primer is required on properly prepared carbon steel or stainless steel. It may also be applied over existing epoxies and phenolics in good condition. For exterior/uninsulated applications requiring UV resistance, topcoat with an approved polyurethane or modified silicone (contact Carboline for recommendations). No topcoat is needed for insulated CUI service. Do not use roller application — brush is for weld striping and touch-up only.

Compatible Thinners

Thinner Application Max Rate
Thinner 213 › Standard spray application — agitate before use (thick viscous appearance is normal) 13 oz/gal (10%)
Thinner 2 › Horizontal surface application only; also for equipment and spray line cleanup 13 oz/gal (10%)

Use only Carboline-supplied thinners. Use of any other thinner will adversely affect product performance and void the warranty.

Chemically Aggressive EnvironmentsNovolac modification resists severe chemical attack. Superior abrasion and permeation resistance.
Cryogenic & Thermal CyclingAdditionally tested for cryogenic service per Thermaline series testing (see brochure). Contact Carboline to confirm suitability for your specific service.

Mixing Instructions

Step 1: Power mix Part A and Part B separately.

Step 2: Combine at 4:1 by volume (Part A to Part B) and power mix to uniformity.

Pot life: 3 hours at 75°F. Do not mix partial kits.

Thinning: Use only Thinner 213 (up to 13 oz/gal) or Thinner 2 for horizontal surfaces. Using unapproved thinners may adversely affect performance and will void the product warranty.

Curing Schedule

Based on 8.0–10.0 mil DFT. Higher film thickness or low ventilation requires longer cure times.

Surface Temp. Dry to Handle Dry to Recoat Final Cure Max Recoat Time
50°F (10°C)18 hours48 hours21 days21 days
60°F (16°C)12 hours32 hours14 days14 days
75°F (24°C)6 hours16 hours7 days7 days
90°F (32°C)3 hours8 hours4 days4 days
Max Recoat Time Exceeded? If the maximum recoat window has passed, abrade the surface by sweep blasting before applying additional coats. Any humidity haze or blush must be removed by water washing before recoating.

Good to Know Before You Buy

⚠️ Critical Notes
  1. Part A flash point is 53°F (12°C) — flammable below ambient temperature. Keep away from sparks, open flames, and ignition sources during mixing and application. Ensure adequate ventilation to keep solvent vapors below the lower explosion limit, especially in enclosed areas.
  2. Never exceed 15 mils DFT per coat. The correct system is 8–10 mils achieved in 1 or 2 coats. Excessive film thickness can trap solvents, slow cure, and lead to premature failure.
  3. Do not mix partial kits. Thermaline 450 must be mixed at the correct 4:1 ratio to cure properly. Partial kit mixing risks off-ratio batches that will not achieve the specified performance.
  4. Epoxies chalk and discolor in UV/sunlight exposure. For exterior or uninsulated applications with UV exposure, topcoat with an approved polyurethane or modified silicone. Contact Carboline for specific topcoat recommendations.

Frequently Asked Questions — Thermaline 450

What is the maximum service temperature for Thermaline 450?
Thermaline 450 is rated for service up to 450°F (232°C). It is suitable for both insulated and uninsulated pipes, stacks, and equipment operating at elevated temperatures. It is also tested for cryogenic service — contact Carboline to confirm suitability for your specific cryogenic application.
What is the coverage rate?
Based on 70% volume solids. At 8.0 mils: approximately 140 ft²/gal theoretical. At 10.0 mils: approximately 112 ft²/gal theoretical. Always allow for application loss. The recommended system is 8–10 mils in 1 or 2 coats; do not exceed 15 mils per coat.
Does Thermaline 450 require a primer?
Thermaline 450 is self-priming on properly prepared carbon steel and stainless steel. It may also be applied over existing epoxies and phenolics in good condition.
Can Thermaline 450 be applied to stainless steel?
Yes. Prepare stainless steel to SSPC-SP16 with a dense angular 2.0–3.0 mil profile via abrasive blasting. Remove all embedded iron and chloride contamination before application to ensure proper adhesion and coating performance.
Does Thermaline 450 require force curing?
No — Thermaline 450 cures at ambient temperature, which is one of its key advantages. No force cure or oven baking is required. Cure times depend on surface temperature; at 75°F the coating is dry to handle in 6 hours and reaches final cure in 7 days.
Can Thermaline 450 be topcoated?
Yes, for applications requiring UV resistance. Thermaline 450 may be topcoated with polyurethane or modified silicone coatings. Contact Carboline for specific product recommendations based on your service environment. No topcoat is needed for insulated service.
What kit sizes are available?
Thermaline 450 is available in 1-gallon kits (12 lbs) and 5-gallon kits (58 lbs). Each kit contains Part A and Part B mixed at a 4:1 ratio. Do not mix partial kits. Use the coverage table above to estimate your project quantities and round up.
