Carbomastic 15 by Carboline is an aluminum-pigmented, high-solids epoxy mastic coating designed for superior barrier protection and corrosion resistance. It performs well over minimally prepared steel substrates, rusted surfaces, or tightly adhered existing coatings, and is suitable as a topcoat or for field touch-up of zinc-rich primers and galvanized steel.
It can also be used under insulation on hot surfaces up to 300°F (150°C).

Provides unmatched levels of barrier protection and corrosion resistance over existing finishes and rusted or SSPC-SP2 or SP3-cleaned steel.

Ratio: 1:1 (A to B)

Power mix separately, then combine and power mix. DO NOT MIX PARTIAL KITS.

THINNING

May be thinned up to 32 oz/gal (25%) with Thinner 10 for normal conditions.
For application to hot substrates up to 200 °F (93 °C) it is recommended to thin approximately 25% (32 oz/gal) with Thinner 230.

Thinner 72 may be used for hot or windy conditions.
Use Thinner 76 for a non-photochemically reactive thinner or Thinner 236E for an exempt thinner.

Alternate Compatible Thinners for Atmospheric Service: Carboline Thinner 2, 10, 15, 76, 225E, 229, 236E, 243E, 248 and Plasite Thinner #19 or #20

of thinners other than those recommended and supplied by Carboline may adversely affect product performance and void product warranty, whether expressed or implied.

UNIQUE FEATURES

The following are unique features of the Carbomastic 15 product. It is a verstile coating and the following may help specifiers and applicators.

Carbomastic 15 contains lamellar (plate-like) aluminum flakes, unlike spherical pigments, creating a labyrinth-like structure that significantly reduces water vapor transmission and enhances barrier properties. This structure slows water penetration, protecting the substrate from corrosion.
Aluminum pigmentation reduces the chalking effect (erosion of epoxy resin under UV exposure) by forming a protective patina, slowing further degradation. However, the coating is sensitive to extreme pH environments (highly acidic or caustic), where aluminum can react and degrade.
Compared to other aluminum-filled mastics, Carbomastic 15 is less suited for wet substrates (unlike its sister product, Carbomastic 615, which can be applied to damp surfaces). Application on wet surfaces requires specific techniques, like back rolling, to ensure proper adhesion.
Carbomastic 15 imparts low curing shrinkage stress (tens to low hundreds of PSI) compared to traditional epoxies (700-1000 PSI), reducing the risk of dislodging existing coatings, rust, or mill scale. This makes it suitable for maintenance overcoating, as it minimizes stress on aged or weaker underlying coatings, preventing failures due to excessive pulling force.

LIMITATIONS

Do not apply over latex coatings. For immersion projects, use only factory made material in special colors. Consult Carboline Technical Service for specifics.
Epoxies lose gloss, discolor and eventually chalk with UV sunlight exposure.

Pot Life: 2 hours @ 75°F (24°C) unthinned. 1 hour @ 90°F (32°C) unthinned

Pot life ends when coating becomes too viscous to use
