Step 1 — Sill / Ledge Length

Step 2 — Flat Panel Wall Area

The Universal Sill Ledge installs with the same finish nailer as the flat panels — no mortar, no lath, no scratch coat. Set the sill first along a snapped level line, then butt flat panels up to it from above. The angled top surface faces away from the building to shed water. Miter at 45° on a standard miter saw for inside and outside corners — no separate corner sill piece is needed.

How the Sill Fits the Full System

Standard Exterior Wainscot Assembly
New construction · wood-framed walls · full manufacturer warranty · ASTM E2556 compliant
Step 1 — Barrier WRB / House Wrap ASTM E2556 compliant · over OSB sheathing
Step 2 — Drainage Evolve Rainscreen Required exterior · 200 sq ft / roll
Step 3 — You Are Here Universal Sill Set first · level line · 25 LF / box
Step 4 — Field Stone Flat Panels Butt to sill top · 14.25 sq ft / box
Step 5 — Corners Evolve Corners Outside corner returns · 7 LF / box

Install the sill ledge before running flat panels — it is the base reference for your stone field, not a cap applied afterward. Snap a level chalk line at finished sill height, nail the sill to it, then start your first course of flat panels at the sill top edge. Seal all miter joints with color-matched exterior caulk after installation.

Interior Accent Wall & Fireplace Surround

Trim — You Are Here Universal Sill Mantel ledges & wall reveals · 25 LF / box

For fireplace surrounds, mantel shelves, or any application near heat, specify Fire-Rated sill ledges and flat panels at time of order. Non-Rated and Fire-Rated versions look identical — check the label before installation. No WRB or rainscreen is required for interior applications.

How to Estimate Your Sill Order

Sills are measured and ordered by linear feet. Measure every horizontal run that will receive a sill ledge — the bottom of each wainscot section plus any window sill widths. Add those measurements together for your total linear footage.

Step What to Do
1. Measure Measure the linear feet of every horizontal sill run — bottom of wainscot sections and window sill widths
2. Total Add all runs together for total linear footage across the project
3. Add overage Multiply total by 1.10 to add a 10% overage for miter cuts and end cuts
4. Divide and round up Divide by 25 (linear ft per box) and round up to the nearest whole box
Example 3 wainscot runs at 12 ft each = 36 linear ft × 1.10 = 39.6 ÷ 25 = 1.58 → order 2 boxes
Product Coverage per Box Used For
Universal Sill Ledge 25 linear ft Bottom termination of wainscot runs & window sills
Flat Panels (most styles) 14.25 sq ft / box Field installation on flat wall surfaces
Corner Panels 7 linear ft · 7 sq ft / box Outside corners of flat panel field
Evolve Rainscreen 200 sq ft / roll Required underlayment for all exterior installations

How to Install the Evolve Stone Universal Sill Ledge

The sill ledge is a trim piece — it installs at the base of the flat panel field, not within it. Set it before running flat panels up the wall so your layout references the sill top edge as the starting point.

Step What to Do Key Detail
1. Prep the wall Install WRB and Evolve Rainscreen on the wall face — extend to where the sill will land Rainscreen must be present under the sill ledge on all exterior applications
2. Snap a level line Snap a chalk line at the finished sill height — this is the top edge of the sill ledge, not the bottom of the stone above it A level reference line ensures consistent sill height across the entire run, especially important on long wainscot walls
3. Cut corners Miter sill pieces at 45° at inside and outside corners using a standard miter saw The same piece handles both corner directions — no separate corner sill is needed. Dry-fit before nailing.
4. Nail sill ledge Nail the sill along the chalk line with 16-gauge stainless finish nails at approximately 8–12 inches on center Angled top faces out — confirm drainage direction before nailing. Both faces can look similar at a glance.
5. Butt flat panels to sill Start the first course of flat panels directly above the sill ledge — the sill top edge is your base reference Do not run flat panels behind the sill. The sill is the termination point, not an underlayment.
6. Caulk joints Run a bead of color-matched exterior sealant along miter joints and where the sill meets the flat panels above Use a paintable, UV-stable exterior caulk in a matching stone color. Do not leave miter joints open on exterior applications.

Good to Know Before You Order

ⓘ What Every Sill Buyer Should Know

  1. Install the sill before you run flat panels. The sill ledge is the base reference for your stone field. Setting it first gives you a level, consistent starting point — flat panels butt up to the sill rather than tucking behind it.
  2. One piece handles every corner — just miter it. The “Universal” name means you don’t need a separate inside or outside corner sill piece. A 45° cut on a standard miter saw handles both. Dry-fit and mark your cuts before nailing the run.
  3. The angled top faces out. The drainage angle on the sill top surface must face away from the building. Confirm orientation before nailing — both faces can look similar at a glance.
  4. Match color to your flat panels. Sill ledges are color-infused throughout the Evolve Material, so cut ends stay consistent — but they only blend at the transition if you order the same color as your flat panel field on that elevation. All 7 colors are available.
  5. Non-Rated ships by default unless you specify Fire-Rated. Both versions are physically identical. For fireplace surrounds, exterior pizza ovens, or any application where local code requires a fire rating, specify Fire-Rated at time of order. Check the label before installation — the packaging is the only visible difference.

Frequently Asked Questions — Evolve Stone Universal Sill Ledge

How many linear feet are in one box?
Each box contains 25 linear feet of sill ledge (approximately 15 pieces at 20 inches each). Measure your total sill run, add 10% for miter cuts and waste, divide by 25, and round up to the nearest whole box.
What is the Universal Sill Ledge used for?
The Universal Sill Ledge is a trim piece — not a field stone. It provides a clean, finished bottom edge at the base of any Evolve Stone wainscot run and at window sill applications. The angled top surface sheds water away from the wall.
What colors is the sill ledge available in?
The Universal Sill Ledge is available in all seven Evolve Stone colors: Phantom Shadow, Kodiak Mine, Morning Aspen, Dune Point, Winter Valley, River Clay, and Afternoon Vale — in both Non-Rated and Fire-Rated versions. Order in the same color as your flat panels on the same elevation.
How do I handle corners on the sill run?
Miter the sill ledge at 45 degrees on a standard miter saw. The same piece handles both inside and outside corners — no separate corner sill product is needed. Dry-fit miter cuts before nailing and seal finished joints with a color-matched exterior caulk.
Does the sill ledge require mortar?
No. The Universal Sill Ledge installs with finish nails only — the same method as Evolve Stone flat panels. No mortar, no wire lath, no scratch coat. On exterior applications, nail through the Evolve Rainscreen into the OSB or plywood substrate.
Can the Universal Sill Ledge be used indoors?
Yes. For interior applications, no WRB or rainscreen is required — the sill nails directly to wood sheathing. For fireplace surrounds or any application near heat, specify Fire-Rated at time of order. Non-Rated and Fire-Rated versions look identical; always check the label before installation.
Which way does the drainage angle face?
The angled top surface must face away from the building so water drains outward rather than back toward the wall. Confirm orientation before nailing — both faces can look similar at a glance.
