Step 1 — Wall Area

Evolve Stone Flat Panels are self-priming and face-nailable — no mortar, no wire lath, no scratch coat required. Install directly over OSB or plywood sheathing with a 16-gauge finish nailer. For exterior applications, a weather-resistant barrier (WRB) and Evolve Rainscreen must be installed first. Corners and Universal Sill are engineered companions — use them to finish every edge cleanly and protect your full manufacturer warranty.

Complete Your System

How to Estimate Your Order

Use these steps to calculate how many boxes you need. Always add 10% overage for cuts, waste, and blending across boxes.

Product Coverage per Unit How to Calculate
Flat Panels (most styles) 14.25 sq ft / box Wall sq ft × 1.10 ÷ 14.25, round up
Monument Gate Flats 20.25 sq ft / box Wall sq ft × 1.10 ÷ 20.25, round up
Corners 7 linear ft / box Total corner height (ft) ÷ 7, round up
Universal Sill 25 linear ft / box Total sill length (ft) ÷ 25, round up
Evolve Rainscreen 200 sq ft / roll Wall sq ft × 1.10 ÷ 200, round up

Open multiple boxes before installing and blend stones together to ensure natural color variation across the wall. Stones within each box vary in size — this variation is intentional and produces the style pattern.

Installation Methods

Evolve Stone Flat Panels support three installation methods depending on substrate type. The Standard Nail-On method is recommended wherever possible and qualifies for the full manufacturer system warranty.

Method Best For Substrate Key Requirements Warranty Impact
Standard Nail-On New construction · wood-framed exteriors · interior accent walls Min. 7/16" OSB or plywood over wood studs ASTM E2556 WRB + Evolve Rainscreen (exterior only) Full manufacturer system warranty
Nail-On Over Furred Wall Masonry or concrete existing walls · retrofit projects Min. ½" KDAT plywood over ½" PVC vertical furring strips Engineer review recommended · WRB + Rainscreen required Manufacturer warranty reduced to 5 years
Glue-Up (Adhesive) Concrete or CMU walls · no wood substrate available Concrete, CMU, or masonry — clean and dry STPE-type adhesive · 3/16" air gap behind stone required · sand stone back before gluing Manufacturer warranty reduced to 5 years

Nailing Pattern by Stone Size

Set the finish nailer countersink depth so nail heads recess slightly below the stone surface. Use 16-gauge 304 stainless steel finish nails, 2" minimum (316 SS for coastal). Press each stone firmly against the rainscreen before nailing.

Stone Size Min. Nails Nail Placement
Small — under 10" long × under 5" tall 2 nails One each side, angled slightly, along the horizontal centerline
Medium — 10"–18" long × under 5" tall 3 nails Left, center, and right along the horizontal centerline
Large — over 5" tall (any length) 2 rows Two full rows of nails following the patterns above based on stone length

Additional nails may always be added to eliminate wobble. Tap each installed stone with your hand — any movement means one more nail is needed. Dry-fires should be checked and corrected before moving to the next lift. Source: Evolve Stone Installation Guide Version 2026.1, Section 2.1.

Good to Know Before You Buy

ⓘ What Sets Evolve Stone Apart

  1. No mortar, no lath, no scratch coat — the headline advantage. Traditional stone veneer requires wire lath, a scratch coat, and mortar — all specialized labor. Evolve Stone eliminates all three. A finish nailer and woodworking tools are all you need, which is why it installs up to 10X faster than the competition.
  2. Color goes all the way through. Cut edges, chipped corners, and on-site trims all stay true to the original color. There is no painted surface to scratch through. For particularly visible cut edges, a coat of Thompson's WaterSeal restores the factory surface sheen — but it is cosmetic, not structural.
  3. Open multiple boxes and blend before you start. Even within the same color, natural variation exists between production runs. Opening several boxes and mixing stones before installation prevents banding or color striping on the wall — a standard practice with all stone and masonry products.
  4. The rainscreen is not optional for exterior work. The Evolve Rainscreen (entangled mesh mat) must be installed over the WRB before nailing. It must be cut and butted at all inside and outside corners — never wrapped or overlapped — to prevent tenting. This drainage and ventilation cavity is what makes the wall assembly perform correctly long term.
  5. Fire-rated and non-rated are different products — check the label. Non-rated ships by default unless fire-rated is specified at time of ordering. Always check the packaging label before installation. Fire-rated product is required for fireplace surrounds, kitchens, and any application where building codes mandate it. When in doubt, consult your local building authority.

Frequently Asked Questions — Evolve Stone Flat Panels

Do I need mortar or wire lath to install Evolve Stone?
No. Evolve Stone is the world's first stone cladding that installs with a finish nailer — no mortar, no wire lath, no scratch coat, and no specialized labor. For exterior installations, a weather-resistant barrier (WRB) and Evolve Rainscreen are installed first, then the stones nail directly through the rainscreen and into the OSB or plywood substrate.
How many square feet does one box cover?
Georgetown Run, National True, Capital Sky, and District View styles each cover 14.25 sq ft per box. Monument Gate covers 20.25 sq ft per box due to the larger stone format. Add 10% overage when calculating your order to account for cuts and waste.
Can Evolve Stone be cut on site?
Yes — with any standard woodworking tool including a miter saw, jigsaw, multi-tool, or Dremel. Because color is infused throughout the material, cut edges stay true to the original color. For highly visible cuts, a coat of clear exterior sealant such as Thompson's WaterSeal restores surface sheen. Always wear an N-95 respirator when cutting — Evolve Stone contains trace amounts of crystalline silica.
Can Evolve Stone be installed indoors?
Yes. For interior installations no WRB or rainscreen is needed — Evolve Stone nails directly to wood sheathing. For applications near heat sources (fireplace surrounds, kitchen backsplashes, pizza ovens), fire-rated product is strongly recommended. For interior installations against a dark-colored substrate, consider painting the OSB black or placing dark fabric behind the stones so any gaps between stones are not visible.
What nails does Evolve Stone require?
16-gauge 304 stainless steel finish nails at 2" length — or long enough to penetrate the structural substrate by at least ¼". In extreme or coastal environments, 316 grade stainless steel is required. Use a finish nailer with an adjustable countersink depth set so nail heads recess slightly below the stone surface.
Can I mix colors on the same project?
Yes — Evolve Stone colors are designed to blend seamlessly with each other. Popular multi-color combinations from completed projects include Morning Aspen + Kodiak Mine, Afternoon Vale + River Clay, and Phantom Shadow + Kodiak Mine + Morning Aspen. We recommend ordering a color sample box before purchasing full quantities.
What is the difference between Non-Rated and Fire-Rated?
Non-Rated product ships by default and is suitable for the vast majority of exterior and interior siding applications. Fire-Rated product (ICC-ES ESL-1247) is required for fireplace surrounds, kitchen applications, and any area where local building codes mandate a fire-rated cladding. Always check the packaging label before installation — the two versions look identical. When in doubt, consult your local building authority.
Does Evolve Stone work in coastal or high-humidity environments?
Yes. Evolve Stone is moisture impermeable and will not hold water against the structure. It is tested to ASTM B117 (salt spray) and ASTM G155 (UV resistance), making it well-suited for coastal installations. Use 316 grade stainless steel nails (rather than 304) in extreme coastal environments for added corrosion resistance.
