Carboguard 893 is a high-performance, multi-purpose epoxy coating designed by Carboline for use in various industrial environments. This versatile product is engineered to deliver superior protection against corrosion, chemical exposure, and physical wear, making it ideal for maintenance and new construction projects.

Key Benefits:

Excellent Corrosion Resistance: Carboguard 893 offers exceptional protection against corrosion, particularly in harsh environments such as marine, offshore, and industrial settings. It forms a robust barrier that shields steel and other substrates from the damaging effects of moisture, salt, and other corrosive elements.

Chemical Resistance: This coating is formulated to resist a broad spectrum of chemicals, including acids, alkalis, solvents, and fuels. This makes it an excellent choice for facilities where exposure to harsh chemicals is a concern, such as chemical plants, refineries, and wastewater treatment facilities.

Durability and Impact Resistance: The coating's tough epoxy formulation provides excellent resistance to abrasion and physical impact, ensuring long-lasting protection even in high-traffic areas.

Low-Temperature Cure: Unlike many other coatings, Carboguard 893 can be applied and cured at low temperatures, down to 35°F (1.7°C), allowing for greater flexibility in application and scheduling.

Common Industry Applications:

  • Marine Environments: Protects steel structures, tanks, and equipment exposed to saltwater and marine atmospheres.
  • Chemical Plants: Ideal for areas with frequent chemical exposure, including storage tanks, pipelines, and processing equipment.
  • Offshore Platforms: Provides long-lasting protection against the corrosive effects of seawater and harsh weather conditions.
  • Power Plants: Suitable for protecting structural steel, piping, and other components in both fossil fuel and nuclear power facilities.
  • Pulp and Paper Mills: Ensures durability and chemical resistance in harsh industrial environments.

Carboguard 893 Coverage Rates

Recommended DFT: 4–6 mils per coat. Apply 6–8 mils when applied over light rust or inorganic zinc primers. Maximum 10 mils in a single coat.

DFT per Coat Coverage (Theoretical) Typical Use
4.0 mils (100 µm) 300 ft²/gal Standard — new steel, smooth substrates
6.0 mils (150 µm) 200 ft²/gal Over light rust / inorganic zinc primers
6–8 mils (150–200 µm) 150–200 ft²/gal Recommended over IZ primer for uniform film
10 mils (250 µm) 120 ft²/gal Maximum single coat — do not exceed

Good to Know Before You Buy

⚠️ Pro Tips & Gotchas — Read Before Ordering
  1. NOT over latex coatings — adhesion failure will occur. Test existing coatings per ASTM D3359 before applying.
  2. Thinning >16 oz/gal cuts pot life in half — pot life drops from 4 hrs to ~2 hrs when heavily thinned. Plan larger jobs accordingly.
  3. Immersion service: factory colors only — field-mixed or tinted colors are NOT approved for immersion applications. Order the correct factory color.
  4. Do NOT mix partial kits — 1:1 ratio is mandatory. Partial kit mixing disrupts stoichiometry and will prevent proper cure.
  5. Max 10 mils per coat — over-application risks sagging, solvent entrapment, and film defects. Stay within the DFT range.
  6. Always topcoat for outdoor / UV service — CG893 is a primer/intermediate coat and will chalk with UV exposure. Apply Carbothane 134 HG or equivalent topcoat over all UV-exposed applications.

Frequently Asked Questions — Carboguard® 893

What is the coverage rate for Carboguard 893?
Carboguard 893 covers 300 ft²/gal at 4.0 mils DFT and 200 ft²/gal at 6.0 mils DFT (theoretical). When applied over light rust or inorganic zinc primers, increase DFT to 6–8 mils for optimal film build and corrosion protection. Maximum single coat is 10 mils.
What is the mix ratio and pot life?
Mix ratio is 1:1 by volume (Part A to Part B). Pot life is 4 hours at 75°F (24°C). If thinned more than 16 oz/gal, pot life drops to approximately 2 hours. Do not mix partial kits — always mix full kits to maintain the correct ratio.
What thinner should I use with Carboguard 893?
Use Carboline Thinner No. 2 (up to 10% by volume) for spray application (conventional or airless). Use Carboline Thinner No. 33 (up to 25% by volume) for brush or roller application. Do not use unauthorized thinners — this may void the warranty.
Can Carboguard 893 be applied over rust?
Yes — Carboguard 893 is designed for steel with light rust (tightly adherent oxidation). Increase application DFT to 6–8 mils over light rust. Heavy, loose, or flaking rust must be mechanically or blast-removed before coating.
Does Carboguard 893 need a topcoat for outdoor use?
Yes — always topcoat for UV-exposed service. Carboguard 893 is a primer and intermediate coat. It will chalk with extended UV exposure. Apply a UV-stable urethane topcoat such as Carbothane 134 HG over all exterior applications.
Can Carboguard 893 be used for immersion service?
Yes, Carboguard 893 is approved for immersion service — but only in factory-made colors. Field-tinted or custom-mixed colors are NOT approved for immersion. Contact Carboline or Material Warehouse to confirm color availability before ordering for immersion projects.
