Step 1 — Exterior Wall Area

Step 2 — Flat Panel Options

Step 3 — Corners & Sill (optional)

Evolve Rainscreen goes on before the stone — it is not an afterthought. Install it over the weather-resistant barrier (WRB) and fasten with cap nails or cap staples at one per square foot. Fabric side faces out toward the stone; the entangled mesh core faces in toward the building. At every corner, cut and butt — never wrap or fold — to keep the drainage path clear. Rainscreen is required for all exterior Evolve Stone installations and is part of the 50-Year System Warranty.

Where Rainscreen Fits the Full System

Standard Exterior Wall Assembly
New construction · wood-framed exterior walls · full 50-Year System Warranty · ASTM E2556 compliant
Step 1 — Barrier WRB / House Wrap ASTM E2556 Type I or II · over OSB sheathing
Step 2 — You Are Here Evolve Rainscreen Fabric out · mesh in · 200 sq ft / roll
Step 3 — Field Stone Flat Panels Nail through rainscreen · 14.25 sq ft / box
Step 4 — Corners Evolve Corners Outside corner returns · 7 LF / box
Step 5 — Trim Universal Sill Window sills & ledge tops · 25 LF / box

Rainscreen must be cut and butted at all inside and outside corners — never wrapped around the corner edge, as wrapping creates tenting that blocks drainage. Fasten with cap nails, cap staples, or cap screws at a minimum of one per square foot. Flat panels, corners, and sill all nail through the rainscreen into the sheathing behind it.

Interior Installations — Rainscreen Not Required
Interior accent walls · basement stone · column wraps · no WRB or rainscreen needed
Field Stone Flat Panels Nail direct to OSB or plywood · no barrier needed
Corners Evolve Corners Outside corner returns · 7 LF / box
Trim Universal Sill Mantel ledges & reveals · 25 LF / box

For interior applications near heat — fireplace surrounds, pizza ovens, kitchen accents — specify Fire-Rated flat panels and corners at time of order. Rainscreen is not involved in interior assemblies at all.

Evolve Rainscreen — Drainage and Ventilation Mat for Evolve Stone Exterior Installations

Evolve Rainscreen — The Required Drainage Layer for Every Exterior Installation

Evolve Rainscreen is a geometric patterned drainage and ventilation mat that goes between the weather-resistant barrier (WRB) and the stone on every exterior Evolve Stone wall. It is not optional — it is the layer that allows the entire exterior system to perform correctly over time.

By holding the stone approximately 3/8″ off the WRB surface, Evolve Rainscreen creates a continuous cavity behind the stone where moisture can drain down and air can circulate. Without this gap, water that infiltrates around fasteners, window trim, or other penetrations has nowhere to go and begins working against the wall assembly from the inside.

Each roll covers 200 square feet (4 ft wide × 50 ft long). Plan one roll per 200 sq ft of wall area, plus 10% overage for cuts and overlaps at horizontal seams.

Why the Drainage Cavity Matters

Stone veneer looks solid from the outside, but exterior walls breathe. Rain, condensation, and humidity work their way behind cladding through every nail hole, seam, and window flashing. Without a path to escape, that moisture stays trapped against the sheathing.

Evolve Rainscreen solves this by maintaining a small but critical air gap between the WRB and the back of the stone. That gap does two things simultaneously: it gives water a downward path out of the wall, and it allows air movement that carries moisture vapor away before it can accumulate.

💧 Drains Water Out

The entangled mesh core channels water downward and out at the base of the wall rather than holding it against the sheathing or WRB.

🌬 Ventilates the Cavity

Continuous airflow through the drainage plane carries moisture vapor away before it can condense on framing or sheathing — critical in both hot and cold climates.

✅ Protects Your Warranty

The 50-Year Evolve Stone System Warranty requires a WRB and Evolve Rainscreen on all exterior installations. Skipping it voids coverage.

Installation Sequence

Evolve Rainscreen installs quickly before the stone goes up. The steps below assume the structural sheathing and WRB are already in place.

Step Action Key Detail
1. Verify wall Confirm sheathing is structurally sound and WRB is fully installed and flashed per manufacturer instructions WRB must comply with ASTM E2556 Type I or II for the 50-Year System Warranty to apply
2. Orient the mat Hold the roll with the fabric side facing away from the building and the entangled mesh core facing in Installing it backwards traps moisture rather than draining it
3. Start horizontal Run Evolve Rainscreen horizontally across the wall, working top-down or bottom-up Either direction works; maintain consistent tension to keep the mat taut
4. Overlap seams At horizontal seams, lap the selvage edge of the upper piece over the top of the piece below This prevents water from running behind the overlap and back toward the WRB
5. Fasten Mechanically fasten with cap nails, cap staples, or cap screws at a minimum of one fastener per square foot Choose fastener length to account for the mat thickness — tip must reach and grip the sheathing
6. Handle corners At inside and outside corners, cut the mat and butt the edge tightly — then begin a new piece on the adjacent face Never wrap or fold the mat around a corner; wrapping creates tenting that blocks drainage
7. Trim penetrations Cut around all windows, doors, outlets, and other wall penetrations Tuck edges behind any existing flashing where possible; seal gaps per WRB manufacturer requirements

How to Estimate Your Order

Rainscreen coverage is calculated from the same wall square footage you use for your flat panels. Add 10% overage to account for cuts around windows, doors, and penetrations.

Step What to Do
1. Measure Calculate total exterior wall area in square feet (height × width of each wall face receiving stone)
2. Add overage Multiply total by 1.10 to add 10% for cuts, seam overlaps, and penetrations
3. Divide and round up Divide adjusted total by 200 (sq ft per roll) and round up to the nearest whole roll
Example 450 sq ft wall × 1.10 = 495 sq ft ÷ 200 = 2.48 → order 3 rolls
Product Coverage / Unit Formula
Evolve Rainscreen200 sq ft / rollWall sq ft × 1.10 ÷ 200, round up
Flat Panels (most styles)14.25 sq ft / boxWall sq ft × 1.10 ÷ 14.25, round up
Monument Gate Flats20.25 sq ft / boxWall sq ft × 1.10 ÷ 20.25, round up
Corners7 linear ft / boxTotal corner height (ft) ÷ 7, round up
Universal Sill25 linear ft / boxTotal sill length (ft) ÷ 25, round up

Rainscreen is required only for exterior walls. Interior installations — accent walls, fireplace surrounds, basement stone — do not require rainscreen or WRB.

Good to Know Before You Install

ⓘ What Every Installer Should Know About Evolve Rainscreen

  1. The corner rule is the most commonly missed step. Every inside and outside corner must be handled by cutting the mat and butting the edge, not by wrapping or folding it around the corner. A wrapped corner creates a ridge in the mat — called tenting — that blocks the downward drainage path and can cause water to pool behind the stone at that location. Cut, butt, and begin fresh on the adjacent face.
  2. Orientation matters more than it looks. The two faces of Evolve Rainscreen are not interchangeable. The fabric side must face out (toward the stone) and the entangled mesh core must face in (toward the building). Installing it reversed puts the smooth face against the WRB, which eliminates the drainage channels entirely.
  3. One fastener per square foot is the minimum. The goal is to keep the mat taut and flat against the WRB with no sags, bulges, or loose sections. A loose mat shifts when stone is nailed over it and can create uneven backing. Err toward more fasteners in windy conditions or on tall walls.
  4. The WRB underneath must be fully installed and flashed first. Evolve Rainscreen does not substitute for the weather-resistant barrier — it goes on top of it. If any WRB seams are open, any flashing is incomplete, or any membrane is torn, those issues need to be corrected before the rainscreen goes up. The rainscreen manages incidental moisture that gets past the stone; the WRB handles everything that gets past the rainscreen.
  5. Interior projects skip this step entirely. No WRB and no rainscreen are needed for interior stone walls, fireplace surrounds, feature walls, or basement applications. Evolve Stone nails directly to OSB or plywood sheathing. For installations near heat sources, specify fire-rated Evolve Stone product — that is separate from the rainscreen question.

Frequently Asked Questions — Evolve Rainscreen

Is Evolve Rainscreen required for exterior installations?
Yes, without exception. Every exterior Evolve Stone installation requires a weather-resistant barrier and Evolve Rainscreen before any stone is nailed. Skipping the rainscreen voids the 50-Year System Warranty and leaves the wall assembly without a drainage path for incidental moisture.
How much area does one roll cover?
Each roll covers 200 square feet at 4 ft wide × 50 ft long. To estimate your order, multiply your total exterior wall area by 1.10 for 10% overage, divide by 200, and round up to the nearest whole roll.
Which side of the mat faces out?
The fabric side faces out — away from the building, toward where the stone will be nailed. The entangled mesh core faces in, toward the WRB. This orientation is what creates the drainage channels. Installing it reversed eliminates those channels and traps moisture instead of draining it.
How do I handle Evolve Rainscreen at corners?
Cut and butt at every corner — inside and outside. Do not wrap, fold, or overlap the mat around any corner edge. Wrapping creates a raised ridge (tenting) at the corner that blocks the drainage path. Cut the mat flush to the corner, butt it tight, and start a new piece on the adjacent wall face.
Do I need Evolve Rainscreen for interior stone walls?
No. Interior applications — accent walls, basement stone, column wraps, and similar — do not require rainscreen or WRB. Evolve Stone nails directly to the OSB or plywood sheathing. The only interior consideration is the fire rating: applications near heat sources require fire-rated Evolve Stone product, which is a separate choice from the rainscreen question.
What kind of fasteners do I use to attach Evolve Rainscreen?
Use cap nails, cap staples, or cap screws — at least one fastener per square foot, or as many as needed to keep the mat flat and taut against the WRB. Choose fastener length based on the mat thickness so the tip reaches and grips the sheathing behind the WRB.
Can I use a different brand of rainscreen with Evolve Stone?
The Evolve Stone installation documentation specifies Evolve Rainscreen or Keene Driwall 013-1 as approved drainage mats for the exterior system. Using a different product may affect warranty coverage. When in doubt, call (800) 567-5358 to confirm before purchasing an alternative.
