Carbocrylic 3359 DTMC (Direct-to-Metal Acrylic Coating) by Carboline is a high-performance, single-component modified acrylic terpolymer coating designed for exceptional weathering, color retention, and corrosion resistance. It excels as a direct-to-metal finish for light- to medium-duty service on tank exteriors, piping, and structural steel, with self-priming capabilities and suitability as a topcoat over recommended primers for a wide range of substrates, including galvanized steel, concrete, and previously coated surfaces.

Provides superior weatherability and corrosion protection on minimally prepared steel surfaces (SSPC-SP2/SP3 minimum), ensuring long-lasting performance in outdoor and mildly corrosive environments with low odor and easy cleanup.

Coverage Rates & Curing Schedule

Coverage Rates

Recommended DFT: 2–4 mils per coat. Two coats are typical for commercial maintenance applications. Values below are theoretical (zero application loss).

DFT Theoretical Coverage Notes
2.0 mils (51 µm) ~400 SF/gal Minimum recommended film build
3.0 mils (76 µm) ~300 SF/gal Mid-range application
4.0 mils (102 µm) ~200 SF/gal Maximum DFT per coat

Coverage values are theoretical; allow for application loss. Source: Carboline Carbocrylic 3359 Technical Data Sheet.

Curing & Recoat Schedule

Times below assume 77°F (25°C) and 50% relative humidity. Lower temperatures, higher humidity, or heavy film build will extend dry times.

Stage @ 77°F (25°C) Notes
Dry to Touch 30 min Surface dry; avoid contact
Dry to Handle 1 hr Light handling only
Recoat Window 2–4 hrs Apply second coat within window
Full Cure 7 days Full hardness and chemical resistance

Dry times are approximate. Consult Carboline TDS for full cure data under varying conditions.

Important Notes

△ Good to Know Before You Buy

Semi-gloss finish — not high gloss. If you need a true high-gloss industrial finish with superior UV stability, see Carbothane 134 HG instead.

Direct-to-metal does NOT always mean no primer. On properly prepared galvanized, aluminum, or previously painted surfaces in commercial environments, DTM application may be sufficient. On bare steel in industrial environments, prime with Carboguard 890 or equivalent for best corrosion protection.

Single-component = easy application. No mixing, no pot life clock, no mix-ratio errors. Open the can, stir, and apply — a significant practical advantage over two-component epoxies and polyurethanes.

NOT for immersion, splash zones, or chemical environments. Carbocrylic 3359 is a waterborne acrylic — not a chemically resistant epoxy. Do not specify it for tanks, sumps, splash zones, chemical plants, or any environment with chemical exposure.

Color retention is good but not as UV-stable as Carbothane. For long-term exterior gloss retention, Carbothane 134 HG (aliphatic polyurethane) is the superior choice.

Upgrade path: If your project requires better chemical resistance or a true high-gloss finish, use Carboguard 890 as primer + Carbothane 134 HG as topcoat instead.

Frequently Asked Questions — Carbocrylic 3359

Is Carbocrylic 3359 high gloss or semi-gloss?
Semi-gloss. If you need a true high-gloss industrial finish with superior UV stability, the correct product is Carbothane 134 HG (two-component aliphatic polyurethane).
Does Carbocrylic 3359 need to be mixed?
No — Carbocrylic 3359 is a single-component (1-part) product. Stir thoroughly before use, but no mixing of separate components is required. There is no pot life clock to watch and no mix-ratio errors possible.
Can Carbocrylic 3359 be applied without a primer?
It is formulated as a direct-to-metal (DTM) coating, so primer is not always required. On properly prepared galvanized, aluminum, or previously painted surfaces in commercial environments, DTM application is often sufficient. On bare steel in industrial environments, priming with Carboguard 890 or equivalent is recommended for optimal corrosion protection.
Is Carbocrylic 3359 suitable for immersion or chemical environments?
No. Carbocrylic 3359 is a waterborne acrylic coating — not a chemically resistant epoxy or urethane. It should not be used in immersion service, tanks, sumps, splash zones, chemical plants, or any environment with direct chemical contact or prolonged water immersion.
How does Carbocrylic 3359 compare to Carbothane 134 HG?
Carbocrylic 3359 is a 1-part acrylic (semi-gloss, easy application, good for commercial maintenance, lower cost). Carbothane 134 HG is a 2-part aliphatic polyurethane (high gloss, superior UV stability, better chemical and abrasion resistance, higher performance). If you need long-term exterior gloss or chemical resistance, Carbothane 134 HG is the right upgrade.
What application methods can I use with Carbocrylic 3359?
Carbocrylic 3359 can be applied by brush, roller, or spray — making it one of the more versatile industrial coatings for maintenance applications. Water cleanup makes field application easy.
