Carboguard 890 Coverage Rates

Recommended DFT: 4–6 mils per coat. Apply 6–8 mils over light rust or inorganic zinc for uniform gloss. Maximum 10 mils in a single coat.

DFT per Coat Imperial Metric Typical Use
4.0 mils (100 microns) 300 ft²/gal 7.4 m²/l Standard — smooth substrates
6.0 mils (150 microns) 200 ft²/gal 4.9 m²/l Over light rust / inorganic zinc
1.0 mil (25 microns) 1,200 ft²/gal 29.5 m²/l Theoretical reference (1 mil)

Allow for loss in mixing and application. Solids by volume: 75% ± 2%.

Mixing Instructions

Mix Ratio: 1:1 by volume (Part A to Part B)

Power mix Part A separately. Power mix Part B separately. Then combine and power mix together until fully uniform. DO NOT MIX PARTIAL KITS.

Pot life: 3 hours at 75°F (24°C). Pot life shortens at higher temperatures — plan your application session accordingly.

Thinning by Application Method

Thinning ratio and thinner type vary by application method per the Carboline TDS. Spray application uses a lower thinning ratio and a different thinner than brush or roller to achieve proper atomization and film formation.

Application Method Max Thinning Recommended Thinner
Conventional / Airless Spray Up to 10% (13 oz/gal) Carboline Thinner #2
Brush Up to 12% (16 oz/gal) Carboline Thinner #33
Roller Up to 12% (16 oz/gal) Carboline Thinner #33
Hot / Windy Conditions Use Thinner #33 for spray; Thinner 230 above 100°F Thinner #33 or #230

Alternate compatible thinners (atmospheric): Carboline Thinner 2, 10, 15, 76, 225E, 229, 236E, 243E, 248 · Plasite Thinner #19 or #20

Use of unauthorized thinners may void the manufacturer's warranty.

Compatible Substrates & Surface Preparation

See the full product data sheet for complete surface preparation guidelines. Carboguard 890 is compatible with:

Substrate Surface Preparation Requirement
Steel (Non-Immersion) SSPC-SP6 minimum. Surface profile: 1.5–3.0 mils angular.
Steel (Immersion Service) SSPC-SP10 (Near White Blast). Profile: 1.5–3.0 mils.
Concrete / CMU Per NACE No. 6 / SSPC-SP 13. Must pass moisture test prior to application.
Drywall & Plaster Joint compound and plaster must be fully cured before coating.
Previously Painted Surfaces Degloss surface. Minimum 3A rating per ASTM D3359 adhesion test. Do NOT apply over latex coatings.
Non-Ferrous Metals Dense angular profile 1.5–3 mils. Blast per SSPC-SP16 (atmospheric) or SSPC-SP17 (immersion).

Limitations & Important Notes

  • Do not apply over latex coatings — adhesion failure will occur.
  • For immersion service, use only factory-made material in designated colors. Consult Carboline Technical Service before ordering.
  • Epoxies lose gloss and may chalk with prolonged UV exposure. Use a UV-stable polyurethane topcoat for exterior applications.

Pot Life: 3 hours at 75°F (24°C). Pot life ends when the coating loses body and begins to sag. Pot life times will be less at higher temperatures.

Frequently Asked Questions — Carboguard 890

What is the coverage rate for Carboguard 890?
Carboguard 890 covers 301 ft²/gal at 4.0 mils DFT and 200 ft²/gal at 6.0 mils DFT (theoretical). Practical yield after application loss is approximately 240–270 ft²/gal with airless spray. Surface profile, substrate condition, and operator technique all affect actual coverage.
Can Carboguard 890 be applied over rust?
Yes — Carboguard 890 is surface tolerant and bonds to tightly adherent rust. Apply at 6.0–8.0 mils DFT over light rust for optimal corrosion protection and uniform gloss. Heavy or loose rust must be removed per SSPC-SP6 or SP10 before application.
What is the mix ratio and pot life?
Mix ratio is 1:1 by volume (Part A to Part B). Pot life is 3 hours at 75°F (24°C) — shorter at higher temperatures. Do not mix partial kits. Mix only what you can apply within the pot life window.
Is Carboguard 890 USDA approved?
Yes — Carboguard 890 is suitable for use in USDA-inspected facilities and is VOC compliant with current AIM regulations and MPI #98 approved, making it appropriate for food processing, packing, and regulated industrial environments.
How long does Carboguard 890 take to cure?
At 75°F (24°C): dry to recoat in 4 hrs · topcoat in 8 hrs · final cure in 24 hrs · immersion service in 5 days. At 40°F (4°C): recoat in 30 hrs · final cure in 7 days · immersion service not recommended. Higher film thickness and humidity extend cure times.
