Carboguard 635 VOC by Carboline is an all-purpose, immersion-grade epoxy coating designed for superior performance in challenging environments. Engineered with low volatile organic compound (VOC) and low hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) content, this versatile epoxy meets stringent environmental regulations while delivering robust protection. It can be applied directly to the metal as a corrosion-resistant self-primer, an intermediate coating over other primers, or even a finish coat, making it a multi-functional solution for many projects.

This product offers several key benefits, making it a top choice for professionals who want a premium corrosion-resistant primer with minimal off-gassing.

Key Benefits:
Low-Temperature Cure: This product effectively cures even in cooler conditions 20°F, expanding application possibilities. It is designed to cure effectively at lower temperatures, making it ideal for projects in colder climates or seasons where other primers might struggle to set properly. If a job requires application in chilly or unpredictable weather, 635 VOC provides a reliable edge.

Low VOC & HAPs: This coating bonds well to various substrates, including steel, concrete, and previously painted surfaces. It also adheres well to existing coatings and tightly to rust, making it suitable for maintenance and new construction projects.

Moisture Tolerance During Application: Unlike many coatings, Carboguard 635 VOC can be applied and cured in damp or humid conditions without compromising performance. This makes it a go-to choice for environments where moisture control is challenging, such as coastal areas or rainy seasons.

Immersion-Grade Performance in Potable Water: Carboguard 635 VOC is approved for potable water service (e.g., ANSI/NSF Std. 61) and meets IMO standards for seawater ballast tanks. It is suitable if the project involves direct contact with drinking water or marine immersion.

Faster Recoat and Handling Times: Carboguard 635 VOC offers quick recoat windows and rapid curing for handling, which can accelerate project timelines. This is particularly valuable for maintenance jobs or tight schedules where downtime must be minimized.

Common Industry Applications:

  • Water and Wastewater Treatment: Coating interior surfaces of potable water storage tanks, pipes, and reservoirs (approved for ANSI/NSF Std. 61). Protecting steel and concrete in wastewater treatment plants against corrosion from moisture and mild chemicals.
  • Agriculture: Coating silos, water tanks, and irrigation systems to prevent rust from constant moisture exposure. Protecting metal barns or equipment sheds in rural settings with variable weather conditions.
  • Municipal Infrastructure Lining and protecting potable water distribution systems, including pipelines and valves. Coating bridges, guardrails, and other steel structures exposed to weather and de-icing salts.
  • Oil and Gas: Coating pipelines, fittings, and above-ground storage tanks exposed to atmospheric corrosion. Protecting steel in refineries and processing plants where surface preparation may be limited.
  • Power Generation & Construction: Ensures durability and longevity for bridges, tunnels, and other critical infrastructure.

Carboguard 635 VOC — Coverage Rates

Recommended DFT: 4–6 mils per coat. Carboguard 635 VOC is self-priming and can serve as a single-coat system or applied in two coats for full compliance in potable water and ballast tank applications.

DFT per Coat Theoretical Coverage Typical Use
4 mils (100 µm) ~200 ft²/gal Standard — smooth surfaces, general industrial
6 mils (150 µm) ~133 ft²/gal Heavy exposure, potable water, ballast tanks

Allow for application losses. Actual coverage varies with surface profile, application method, and temperature.

Good to Know Before You Buy

  • ⚠️ Mix Ratio is 4:1 — NOT 1:1. Carboguard 635 VOC uses 4 parts A to 1 part B by volume. This is a critical distinction from products like Carboguard 890. Measuring the wrong ratio is the most common error and will cause cure failure. Measure precisely every time.
  • 🚫 Do NOT apply over latex coatings. Adhesion failure will result. Previously painted surfaces must be free of latex. Test with ASTM D3359 adhesion test (minimum 3A rating) before applying over any existing coating.
  • 🏅 NSF 61 Certification requires strict TDS compliance. For NSF/ANSI 61-certified potable water applications, you must use only approved colors and keep thinning within TDS limits. Over-thinning or non-standard colors void the certification. Do not deviate.
  • 📛 Product Name Copy Error on This Page. Some listings show "Carboguard 365 VOC" — this is a typo. The correct product name is Carboguard 635 VOC. You are buying the right product; the name error does not affect what ships.
  • ⚓ IMO Ballast Tank Certification — a key differentiator. Unlike Carboguard 890, Carboguard 635 VOC meets IMO ballast tank standards, making it suitable for seawater ballast tank lining on commercial vessels.
  • 🔍 Not the same as Carboguard 690 or Hydroplate 1086. Carboguard 690 is optimized for wastewater (non-potable) and damp/wet surfaces. Hydroplate 1086 is a high-solids potable water tank lining product with different surface prep and cure requirements. Confirm you have the right product for your application.

Frequently Asked Questions — Carboguard® 635 VOC

Question Answer
What is the mix ratio for Carboguard 635 VOC? 4:1 by volume (Part A to Part B). This is NOT a 1:1 product. Measure 4 parts A for every 1 part B precisely. Power mix each component separately before combining, then mix together until fully blended. Do not mix partial kits. Using the wrong ratio causes incomplete cure and coating failure.
Is Carboguard 635 VOC NSF 61 certified for potable water? Yes — Carboguard 635 VOC is ANSI/NSF Standard 61 certified for contact with potable water on steel tank interiors. To maintain certification, you must use approved colors and keep thinning within TDS limits. Over-thinning or using non-standard colors voids NSF compliance. Always reference the official Carboline TDS for certified application parameters.
Can it be used in seawater ballast tanks? Yes — Carboguard 635 VOC meets IMO ballast tank standards. This is a significant advantage over products like Carboguard 890, which do not carry IMO ballast tank certification. Consult the TDS and your classification society's requirements for application specifics.
What's the minimum temperature for application and cure? Carboguard 635 VOC can be applied at substrate temperatures as low as 20°F (−7°C), making it suitable for cold-weather applications where many other epoxies cannot cure. Ensure the substrate temperature is at least 5°F above the dew point to prevent moisture contamination.
Can it be applied over existing coatings? Yes — Carboguard 635 VOC can be applied over previously painted surfaces that are tightly adherent, in good condition, and pass the ASTM D3359 adhesion test (minimum 3A rating). It must NOT be applied over latex coatings. Adhesion failure will result on latex surfaces.
Is this the same as "Carboguard 365 VOC" listed elsewhere? No — "Carboguard 365 VOC" is a copy error. The correct product name is Carboguard 635 VOC. Some product pages contain a typo transposing the 6 and 3. There is no Carboline product called "Carboguard 365 VOC." You are purchasing the correct product: Carboguard 635 VOC.
