Fire Retardant Spray for Fabric

Flame Stop i is a water-based, post-treatment interior fire retardant that penetrates materials and bonds with their cellular structure. It protects substrates by initiating a self-extinguishing reaction when the treated material encounters an open flame. When applied correctly, it achieves a Class A rating on certain natural and synthetic fabrics and a Class B rating on porous woods such as pine or Douglas fir. Flame Stop I is formulated to be user-friendly, non-toxic, non-combustible, non-carcinogenic, and free of PDBEs.

Basic Uses: Flame Stop I is effective for protecting a variety of materials, including draperies, decorative fabrics, furniture, cotton, paper, polyester, cardboard, curtains, and Douglas fir. Prior to application, materials should be evaluated for compatibility. Its versatility makes it suitable for use in restaurants, hotels, hospitals, assisted living facilities, schools, commercial buildings, and personal residences.

Advantages:

  • Class Ratings: Achieves Class A rating on specific fabrics and Class B on Douglas fir with a flame spread of 35 and smoke developed of 15, as confirmed by independent third-party tests.
  • Durability: Forms a molecular bond with substrates, ensuring indefinite fire retardation for most interior applications without altering structural integrity.
  • Maintenance: Treated fabrics can be dry cleaned up to 15 times before reapplication is necessary.
  • Ease of Use: Dries clear and can be applied by spraying, immersing, brushing, or rolling. Treated wood can be painted with most latex-based paints after curing for 48 hours.

Flame Stop i has been tested to the following standards: ASTM E-84, NFPA 255, UL 723: U.S. Testing #LA 62192, CA Reg. #C-14401 NFPA 701; Registered with the CSFM for use on interior decorative materials only.

Coverage rate: 200-400 square feet per gallon. Coverage variation may occur depending on fabric thickness, density, and weave. Do not Dilute, and do not wash. See the product data sheet for storage, handling, and application instructions. Testing a small portion of the material you wish to treat is always advisable to ensure efficacy.

Application Recommendations

Ensure that all materials are clean prior to application. Apply Flame Stop I as is on fabric by spraying or immersing at the rate of 200 - 400 square feet per gallon depending on the density, thickness, and weave. If the material is thick or dense, both sides may need to be treated.

If the material is synthetic, a heavier coat may be needed. Before proceeding with full application, test in an inconspicuous area to ensure the compatibility and that the color and hand are not affected.

After application, there must be a 5 – 10% increase in the dry weight of the material. Apply at the rate of 200 square feet per gallon on wood by spraying, brushing, or rolling. If spraying onto a vertical surface where runoff could occur, multiple applications may be required. When applying multiple coats, wait until the first coat has penetrated before beginning the next application.

One coat will require a 24-hour curing period. For spray application, use a .050 - .010 tip size and a low pressure airless sprayer.

TESTING
A small-scale test can be performed with the utilization of a sample of the treated material and a small flame (butane lighter or match). Hold a 4” x 12” piece of the treated material vertically and apply the flame to the lower portion for 10 seconds and then remove the ignition source. The flame must self-extinguish within two (2) seconds. This test is similar to the small-scale NFPA 705 field test.
