⚠️ Carbothane 134 HG is a finish topcoat — it must be applied over a compatible primer or epoxy intermediate coat. It cannot be applied directly to bare steel. See the Coating Systems section below to choose the right system for your project.

Compatible Thinners

Thinner Application Max Rate
Thinner #25 › Spray (preferred) 20% (25 oz/gal)
Thinner #214 Spray 20% (25 oz/gal)
Thinner #72 Spray 20% (25 oz/gal)
Thinner #215 Brush & Roller only 20% (25 oz/gal)

Do not use Thinner #2 or #33 — those are for epoxy products. Use of unauthorized thinners voids warranty.

Good to Know Before You Buy

⚠️ Key Points
  1. This is the only gloss and metallic-color product in the Carbothane 133/134 family. If a specification calls for high gloss or metallic pigmented colors, 134 HG is the correct product. For satin finishes, see Carbothane 133 HB, 133 LH, or 133 LV.
  2. It is a finish coat — requires a compatible primer. Do not apply directly to bare steel. Consult Carboline Technical Service if unsure which primer is appropriate for your substrate and service environment.
  3. 80% RH maximum — the most restrictive in the 133/134 family. The 133 series allows up to 90% RH. Monitor humidity closely on humid job sites; this product’s high-gloss finish is more sensitive to moisture exposure.
  4. 4:1 mix ratio — verify before mixing. Each Carbothane product uses a different ratio: 134 HG is 4:1, 133 LV is 5:1, 133 HB is 6:1. Do not mix partial kits.

Frequently Asked Questions — Carbothane 134 HG

What is the coverage rate for Carbothane 134 HG?
At the recommended 2–3 mil DFT: 561 ft²/gal at 2 mils and 374 ft²/gal at 3 mils (theoretical, based on 70% volume solids). As a thin-film topcoat, Carbothane 134 HG goes significantly further per gallon than epoxy intermediate coats. Allow for loss in mixing and application.
Is Carbothane 134 HG UV resistant?
Yes — Carbothane 134 HG is an aliphatic polyurethane, meaning it is inherently UV-stable and will not yellow, chalk, or lose gloss in direct sunlight. Unlike aromatic epoxies such as Carboguard 890, which chalk and dull outdoors, Carbothane retains its high-gloss finish and color on exterior surfaces. It exceeds SSPC Paint 36 Level 3 for color and gloss retention.
What is the mix ratio and pot life?
Mix ratio is 4:1 by volume (Part A to Part B, Urethane Converter 811). Power mix Part A separately, then combine with Part B and power mix again. Do not mix partial kits. Pot life is 4 hours at 75°F (24°C) — shorter at higher temperatures.
What specifications does Carbothane 134 HG meet?
Carbothane 134 HG meets or exceeds SSPC Paint 36 Level 3, AWWA D102 OCS 5 and 6, MIL-PRF-85285E Type II Class H, UFGS 09 97 13.27, and is approved for USDA-inspected facilities. It is also VOC compliant to current AIM regulations — making it a common specification choice for water infrastructure, government, and military projects.
Can Carbothane 134 HG be recoated after years of exposure?
Yes — Carbothane 134 HG has indefinite recoatability. Wipe a test area with Thinner 214 or 215: a slight tack means the surface is ready to recoat without sanding. If no tack is present, lightly abrade before applying the new coat. Clean the surface thoroughly before recoating regardless.
How does Carbothane 134 HG differ from the Carbothane 133 series?
Carbothane 134 HG is the only gloss finish in the 133/134 family and the only product with metallic colors. It uses a 4:1 mix ratio and thinner 2–3 mil DFT (versus 3–5 mils for the 133 satin products). It carries the most restrictive humidity limit at 80% RH (versus 90% for the 133 series) and meets AWWA, MIL-PRF, UFGS, and USDA specifications not shared by the 133 satin products.
