Recommended Coating Systems

Single-Coat Direct-to-Metal System ★ Signature System

Carbocrylic 3359 DTMC's defining capability — self-priming and direct-to-metal, it functions as both primer and finish coat in a single product, eliminating the need for a separate primer entirely. Formulated as an acrylic terpolymer with ≤100 g/l VOC per EPA Method 24, it complies with SCAQMD regulations and delivers excellent corrosion protection, weatherability, and gloss and color retention. Product flyer performance data: ASTM B117 salt fog 500 hours — no blistering on plane, 0 mm undercutting at scribe. Apply 3–5 mils DFT.

Direct-to-Metal — Primer & Finish Carbocrylic 3359 DTMC 3–5 mils DFT · high gloss · single component · self-priming
Two-Coat System — Inorganic Zinc + 3359 DTMC Topcoat

For steel requiring maximum corrosion protection, 3359 DTMC performs as the finish coat over an inorganic zinc primer, combining cathodic protection at the substrate with the DTMC's proven barrier and weathering performance. Compatible with inorganic and organic zinc primers per the PDS. A mist coat may be required over inorganic zinc to minimize bubbling. Apply 3–5 mils DFT finish coat.

⚠️ Good to Know Before You Buy

  1. KEEP FROM FREEZING — permanently damaged if frozen. Store indoors at 45°–110°F. This is a waterborne acrylic; freezing destroys the emulsion and the product cannot be restored. Do not store in unheated spaces during winter months.
  2. Two DFT ranges — know which applies to your system. Apply at 2–3 mils over primers or 3–5 mils direct to properly prepared substrates. Do not confuse the two. VOC as supplied is 44 g/l; the EPA Method 24 value is 100 g/l — confirm which applies to your jurisdiction before specifying.
  3. Dry to Recoat and Dry to Handle are significantly different. At 75°F: Dry to Recoat is 2 hours, but Dry to Handle is 6 hours. At 50°F: Dry to Recoat is 3 hours, Dry to Handle is 10 hours. Full adhesion and water resistance can take several weeks at 75°F with proper ventilation. Waterborne acrylics are susceptible to handling damage during early cure.
  4. Do not apply if temperature will drop below 50°F within 24 hours. The acrylic film-forming process requires sustained temperature for proper coalescence. Also do not apply when the surface is less than 5°F above the dew point, or when humidity exceeds 85% RH. Rain, dew, or condensation before cure will compromise film formation.

Frequently Asked Questions — Carbocrylic 3359 DTMC

What is Carbocrylic 3359 DTMC?
Carbocrylic 3359 DTMC is a single-component, high-performance direct-to-metal (DTM) modified acrylic terpolymer coating from Carboline. It is self-priming — designed to function as both primer and finish coat on most steel substrates without a separate primer. It delivers a high gloss finish with excellent weatherability, corrosion protection, and long-term gloss and color retention. It applies at 3–5 mils DFT direct to metal, and 2–3 mils DFT over recommended primers. VOC as supplied is 44 g/l; EPA Method 24 value is 100 g/l.
Does Carbocrylic 3359 DTMC require a primer?
Not on most steel substrates — it is self-priming and direct-to-metal. For other substrates, per the PDS:
Galvanized steel: Prime with Sanitile 120 (SSPC-SP1 surface prep)
Concrete & CMU: Prime with Carbocrylic 120 (concrete must be cured 28 days; CMU 15 days minimum)
Drywall & plaster: Prime with Carbocrylic 120
Wood: Prime with Carbocrylic 120
Previously painted surfaces: Prime with Carbocrylic 120 or as recommended
What is the VOC content of Carbocrylic 3359 DTMC?
There are two VOC values for this product:
As supplied: 0.37 lbs/gal (44 g/l)
EPA Method 24: 0.83 lbs/gal (100 g/l)
Thinned at 6 oz/gal with potable water: 0.37 lbs/gal (44 g/l) — VOC unchanged
The product meets most VOC regulations. Values are nominal and may vary slightly with color. Confirm compliance with the specific limit for your jurisdiction before specifying.
What dry film thickness should I apply Carbocrylic 3359 DTMC at?
There are two DFT specifications depending on how it is used:
Over recommended primers: 2–3 mils (51–76 microns)
Direct to properly prepared substrates: 3–5 mils (76–127 microns)
Theoretical coverage at 40% solids: 321 ft²/gal at 2 mils · 214 ft²/gal at 3 mils · 160 ft²/gal at 4 mils · 128 ft²/gal at 5 mils. Allow for loss in mixing and application.
What are the dry to recoat and dry to handle times?
Dry to Recoat: 3 hours @ 50°F · 2 hours @ 75°F · 1 hour @ 90°F
Dry to Handle: 10 hours @ 50°F · 6 hours @ 75°F · 4 hours @ 90°F
Times are for 3–4 mils DFT. High humidity, high film thickness, insufficient ventilation, or cooler temperatures will lengthen both times. The acrylic film-forming process may require several weeks at 75°F with proper ventilation to develop ultimate adhesion and water resistance.
What surfaces can Carbocrylic 3359 DTMC be applied to?
Per the April 2025 PDS, 3359 DTMC is suitable for tank exteriors, piping, and structural steel for light to medium duty service. It applies direct-to-metal on properly prepared steel. It also features excellent adhesion to FBE (fusion-bonded epoxy). See the Surface Preparation table above for specific prep standards and primer requirements for each substrate type.
Does Carbocrylic 3359 DTMC require thinning?
Thinning is not normally required. If thinning is needed, clean potable water may be used up to 6 oz/gal. VOC remains unchanged at 0.37 lbs/gal (44 g/l) at this thinning rate. Use of thinners other than those supplied or recommended by Carboline may adversely affect performance and void the product warranty.
What are the application temperature requirements?
Minimums: material 50°F (10°C) · surface 50°F (10°C) · ambient 50°F (10°C) · humidity 0%
Maximums: material 100°F (38°C) · surface 120°F (49°C) · ambient 110°F (43°C) · humidity 85%
Do not apply when surface temperature is less than 5°F (3°C) above the dew point. Do not apply if temperatures are expected to drop below 50°F within 24 hours of application.
What is the temperature resistance of Carbocrylic 3359 DTMC?
Dry temperature resistance is 235°F (113°C) continuous and 325°F (163°C) non-continuous. Suitable as a topcoat for substrates operating up to 300°F (149°C) when used over Carbotherm 551 or Carbotherm 3300 at a minimum 40 mils DFT per their respective PDS. Slight discoloration and loss of gloss may occur above 200°F (93°C).
What industries and applications is Carbocrylic 3359 DTMC used for?
Carbocrylic 3359 DTMC is specified for light to medium duty service on tank exteriors, piping, and structural steel across industrial, architectural, institutional, power, and petrochemical applications. Its self-priming DTM capability, high gloss finish, dry-fall properties, excellent FBE adhesion, Class A flame and smoke rating, and broad VOC compliance make it a versatile single-product solution for a wide range of project types.
