Carboguard 890 GF ships from Carboline regional warehouses. Each kit includes Part A, Part B, and the Glass Flake Additive — all three components.

Most orders ship within 2–3 business days of order placement. Transit times shown on the map are typical but not guaranteed.

Note: This is a three-component system. Confirm all three components are included with your order before starting any project.

Carboguard 890 GF Coverage Rates

Coverage is lower than standard Carboguard 890 due to the glass flake reinforcement. Size your order accordingly and do not assume coverage rates from the standard 890 apply here.

DFT per Coat Theoretical Coverage Metric Typical Use
6 mils (150 µm) ~206 ft²/gal ~5.1 m²/l Splash zone — minimum recommended
8 mils (200 µm) 154 ft²/gal 3.8 m²/l Standard — immersion and chemical service
10 mils (250 µm) ~123 ft²/gal ~3.0 m²/l Heavy immersion — aggressive chemical environments
12 mils (300 µm) ~103 ft²/gal ~2.5 m²/l Maximum build — severe service, tank interiors
20 mils (500 µm) 62 ft²/gal 1.5 m²/l Max DFT per coat — extreme service / tank linings

Coverage rates per Carboline TDS (December 2024). Formula: 1,235 ft²/gal ÷ DFT (mils). Allow for application loss (typically 10–20% for airless spray). Verify with TDS before ordering.

Mixing Order — Three-Component System

Mixing order is critical. Adding the Glass Flake Additive too early — before Parts A and B are fully combined — causes poor flake orientation and significantly reduces barrier performance. Follow these steps exactly. Do not mix partial kits.

Power Mix Part A
Using a power mixer, thoroughly mix Part A (Base) separately in its original container until uniform.
In original container · Power mixer required
Power Mix Part B
Using a power mixer, thoroughly mix Part B (Hardener) separately in its original container until uniform.
In original container · Power mixer required
Combine A + B — Power Mix Together
Combine Part A and Part B at a 1:1 ratio by volume in a mixing container. Power mix together until fully blended and uniform. Pot life begins at this step — 3 hours at 75°F.
1:1 ratio (A to B) · Pot life begins now
⚠ Slowly Add Glass Flake Additive
Slowly pour the Glass Flake Additive bag (3.62 lbs per 2-gal mix) into the combined A+B while mixing continuously. Power mix for 3–5 minutes until the flake is fully and evenly incorporated. Do not dump the additive in all at once.
3.62 lbs per 2-gal mix · Mix 3–5 min continuously
Screen & Apply Immediately
If spraying, screen the mixed material through a 30-mesh strainer before loading spray equipment. Apply immediately — do not let mixed material sit. Pot life is 3 hours at 75°F and shortens at higher temperatures.
30-mesh screen for spray · Apply immediately
⚠ Critical Rules: (1) Never add the Glass Flake Additive before Parts A and B are fully combined — incorrect order degrades flake orientation and barrier performance. (2) Do not mix partial kits — all three components must be used together in full kit quantities. (3) Pot life is 3 hours at 75°F (24°C); plan batch sizes accordingly, especially in hot conditions (San Marcos summers routinely exceed 90°F, shortening pot life significantly).

Good to Know Before You Buy

⚠️ Important Notes — Read Before Ordering

  1. THREE-COMPONENT SYSTEM — not a standard 2-part kit. Buyers expecting a typical Part A + Part B epoxy will be surprised. The Glass Flake Additive is a required third component that ships with the kit. All three must be used together.
  2. Mixing ORDER is critical. You must power mix Part A and Part B FIRST, then add the Glass Flake Additive. Adding the glass flake too early causes poor flake orientation and significantly reduced barrier performance. See the mixing guide above.
  3. Coverage is lower than standard Carboguard 890. At 154 ft²/gal @ 8 mils DFT, you'll use more product per square foot than standard CG890. Size your order for CG890 GF specifically — do not assume 890 coverage rates apply.
  4. Flat finish only — will chalk outdoors without a topcoat. CG890 GF is not suitable for UV-exposed exterior service without a polyurethane topcoat. Apply Carbothane 134 HG over it for outdoor atmospheric exposure.
  5. Not a direct substitute for standard CG890 in atmospheric service. CG890 GF is engineered for severe chemical immersion and marine environments. It's overkill (and more expensive) for routine maintenance painting in atmospheric service.

Frequently Asked Questions — Carboguard® 890 GF

How many components are in Carboguard 890 GF?
Carboguard 890 GF is a three-component system: Part A, Part B, and a Glass Flake Additive. Standard two-part epoxy mixing procedures do not apply. The glass flake additive is critical to performance and must be added in the correct order — see the mixing guide on this page.
What is the correct mixing order for Carboguard 890 GF?
1. Power mix Part A separately. 2. Power mix Part B separately. 3. Combine A + B at 1:1 ratio; power mix until uniform — pot life begins here. 4. Slowly add Glass Flake Additive (3.62 lbs per 2-gal mix) while mixing continuously for 3–5 minutes. 5. Screen through 30-mesh if spraying. Apply immediately.
What is the coverage rate for Carboguard 890 GF?
154 ft²/gal at 8 mils DFT (3.8 m²/l) — theoretical per Carboline TDS December 2024. This is lower than standard Carboguard 890 due to the glass flake reinforcement. Do not assume standard 890 coverage rates apply here — size your order for CG890 GF specifically.
Can Carboguard 890 GF be used outdoors without a topcoat?
Not recommended. CG890 GF has a flat finish and will chalk with prolonged UV exposure — like all epoxies. For outdoor, UV-exposed service, apply Carbothane 134 HG polyurethane topcoat over the cured CG890 GF.
Is Carboguard 890 GF a substitute for standard Carboguard 890?
No. CG890 GF is engineered for severe chemical immersion and marine environments — it is not a drop-in replacement for standard CG890 in routine atmospheric maintenance. The glass flake reinforcement adds cost and complexity that is unnecessary for general service. Use standard CG890 for atmospheric work and CG890 GF where severe chemical resistance or immersion is required.
What primer do I need under Carboguard 890 GF?
None required for most applications — Carboguard 890 GF is self-priming on properly prepared steel (SSPC-SP6 minimum for atmospheric, SSPC-SP10 for immersion). For maximum marine corrosion protection, Carbozinc 11 inorganic zinc primer is recommended as a base coat before CG890 GF.
