Compatible Thinners — 133 LV

Thinner Use Max Rate
Thinner 236E Spray (lowest VOC option) 16 oz/gal
Thinner 242E Spray (VOC-exempt t-butyl acetate) 16 oz/gal
Thinner 25 › Spray 7.3 oz/gal
Thinner 214 Spray 8 oz/gal
Thinner 215 Brush / Roller 8 oz/gal
Thinner 2 or Acetone Cleanup only

For low-VOC compliance, Thinner 236E is the best choice — it does not raise the as-supplied VOC at the maximum thinning rate. Use of thinners other than those listed may void the product warranty.

Carbothane 133 Family — When to Choose Which

133 LV ★ This Product

Lowest VOC (211 g/L) and lowest HAPs in the family. Longest pot life (6 hours). Best for VOC-restricted jurisdictions, HAPs compliance, or applications where extra working time matters. Highest solids (72%) and best coverage rate.

133 LH

Lower-sheen satin finish meeting SSPC Paint 36 Level 3. Choose for bridge/highway and industrial maintenance specs requiring reduced glare. Better at hiding substrate imperfections than 133 LV.

133 HB

High-build satin finish. Most economical. Direct to inorganic zinc with mist coat. Backed by extensive ASTM test data (4,000-hr salt fog, 8,600-hr water fog). Best for general industrial steel and bridge applications.

134 HG

High-gloss finish. Only product in the family with metallic colors. Meets AWWA D102 OCS 5/6, MIL-PRF-85285E, UFGS 09 97 13.27, USDA-suitable. Thin-film 2–3 mils. Best for architectural and specification work.

Good to Know Before You Buy

⚠️ Application Notes & Pro Tips
  1. Thinner 236E and 242E maintain the 211 g/L VOC when thinning for spray. These are the only thinners that preserve the as-supplied VOC level. Thinner 25, 214, and 215 all raise VOC above 211 g/L. If VOC compliance at 211 g/L is required, use only 236E or 242E for spray thinning.
  2. 5:1 mix ratio — verify before mixing. Each Carbothane product uses a different ratio: 133 LV is 5:1, 133 LH and 134 HG are 4:1, 133 HB is 6:1. Mixing the wrong ratio compromises cure and film performance. Do not mix partial kits.
  3. 6-hour pot life — the longest in the 133/134 family. Useful for large spray jobs or when working in extreme heat slows production. Pot life still shortens at higher ambient temperatures, and moisture contamination causes gellation regardless of remaining pot life.
  4. Indefinite recoat window. No maximum recoat time. Wipe surface with Thinner 25 before recoating — slight tack means it is ready to recoat without abrading.
  5. Cures to 35°F surface temp without Additive 101. One of the lowest minimum surface temperatures of any polyurethane topcoat. With Additive 101, cure extends to 20°F, but pot life drops 40–50% — plan batch sizes accordingly.
  6. Moisture-sensitive in the liquid stage. Application above 90% RH or exposure to dew/rain before full cure causes gloss loss and micro-bubbling. Substrate must be above the dew point (industry standard is 5°F above).
  7. Storage humidity is 0–80% RH — different from the 90% RH application maximum. Store Part A and Part B indoors in sealed containers in a controlled environment.
  8. Flash point of Part A is 60°F (15°C) — flammable solvent. Keep away from sparks and open flames. Use non-ferrous tools and conductive footwear in areas where explosion hazards exist. Use MSHA/NIOSH approved respiratory protection in enclosed spaces.

Frequently Asked Questions — Carbothane 133 LV

What is the VOC value for Carbothane 133 LV?
Carbothane 133 LV is 211 g/L (1.76 lbs/gal) per EPA Method 24 as supplied — the lowest VOC in the Carbothane 133/134 family. Thinner 236E (up to 16 oz/gal) and Thinner 242E (up to 16 oz/gal) maintain the 211 g/L VOC when used for spray thinning. Thinner 25, 214, and 215 all raise the VOC above that level. The product contains VOC-exempt dimethyl carbonate; check local regulations before specifying.
What is the coverage rate for Carbothane 133 LV?
At 72% volume solids (1,155 ft²/gal at 1 mil theoretical), Carbothane 133 LV covers 385 ft²/gal at 3.0 mils DFT and 231 ft²/gal at 5.0 mils DFT (theoretical). The recommended dry film thickness is 3–5 mils per coat; do not exceed 7 mils. Allow for application loss in all estimates.
What is the mix ratio and pot life of Carbothane 133 LV?
Carbothane 133 LV uses a 5:1 mix ratio by volume (Part A to Part B, Urethane Converter 811). Power mix Part A separately, then combine with Part B and power mix again. Do not mix partial kits. Pot life is 6 hours at 75°F — the longest in the Carbothane 133/134 family. Pot life shortens at higher temperatures. Moisture contamination will shorten pot life and cause gellation.
Which thinners maintain the 211 g/L VOC when thinning for spray?
Thinner 236E (up to 16 oz/gal) and Thinner 242E (up to 16 oz/gal) both maintain the 211 g/L VOC value when used for spray thinning. Thinner 25 at 7.3 oz/gal raises VOC to 249 g/L; Thinner 214 at 8 oz/gal raises it to 246 g/L. For brush and roller, Thinner 215 (up to 8 oz/gal) results in 249 g/L. Note: Thinner 242E contains VOC-exempt t-butyl acetate — check local regulations regarding its use.
What are the application temperature limits for Carbothane 133 LV?
Material temperature: 50–100°F; surface and ambient: 35–110°F; humidity: 0–90% RH. Substrate must be above the dew point (industry standard is 5°F above). The 35°F minimum surface temperature is one of the lowest for any polyurethane topcoat. With Additive 101, cure continues down to 20°F (–7°C). The product is moisture-sensitive — protect from dew and rain until fully cured.
Does Carbothane 133 LV have a maximum recoat time?
No. Carbothane 133 LV has indefinite recoatability. The surface must be clean and dry. As a practical test, wipe the surface with Thinner 25: if the film shows a slight tack, it is suitable for recoating without extensive surface preparation such as abrading.
How does Carbothane 133 LV compare to 133 HB and 133 LH?
133 LV is the lowest-VOC option (211 g/L), lowest HAPs, and has the longest pot life (6 hours) and highest volume solids (72%). Choose it for VOC-restricted jurisdictions or HAPs compliance requirements. 133 HB is the most economical satin-finish option with direct-to-inorganic-zinc capability and extensive ASTM performance data (4,000-hr salt fog) — best for general industrial steel. 133 LH meets SSPC Paint 36 Level 3 and provides a lower sheen — best for bridge/highway and industrial maintenance where glare reduction is specified. All three have indefinite recoat windows and 300°F continuous heat resistance.
