Carboweld 11 is a self-curing, inorganic zinc silicate primer engineered as a weldable pre-construction shop primer for steel fabrication.
This product provides reliable corrosion protection during the construction phase of a project while allowing fabricators to weld and cut coated steel at production-line speeds, making it ideal for shipyards, structural steel shops, and other industrial fabrication environments.

Here are some key features:
  • Weldability: Welds made over Carboweld 11 coated steel are equal in every respect to welds made to uncoated steel. The coating supports submerged arc, flux core, short arc, and MIG processes at automatic welding speeds up to 48″ per minute, with weld spatter that does not adhere to or damage the surrounding film.
  • Fast Cure: Carboweld 11 dries to touch and to handle in 3 to 5 minutes at typical shop temperatures, allowing coated plate to be moved, stacked, and processed almost immediately after spraying with minimal disruption to fabrication workflow.
  • Certified Pre-Construction Primer: Carboweld 11 is certified as a pre-construction primer for Lloyd’s Register constructions, making it well suited for shipbuilding, offshore/marine, structural steel, and other heavy-fabrication industries that require third-party-approved shop primers.

Application: The product is applied by conventional or airless spray for optimal coverage. Thinning is not normally required, but up to 25.6 oz/gal of Thinner #21 may be used in cool weather (below 40°F) or Thinner #33 in hot or windy conditions. Brush application is permitted for touch-up of areas less than one square foot.
DO NOT APPLY BY ROLLER. Power-mix the base, then sift the zinc filler slowly into the base under continuous agitation, mix until lump-free, and pour through a 30-mesh screen. Do not mix partial kits. Keep under mild agitation during application. Pot life is 48 hours at 75°F.

Carboweld 11 protects steel during the construction phase without slowing the fabricator, helping shops maintain high welding throughput while still delivering a corrosion-resistant, topcoat-ready surface. For projects with extended construction phases or specialized service conditions, please consult Carboline Technical Service. For full application guidance, refer to the product’s datasheet.

Surface Preparation

Carboweld 11 is designed for new structural steel in shop application only. All surfaces must be clean and dry before application.

Surface / Service Preparation Requirement
General DegreasingRemove all oil and grease per SSPC-SP1 using Thinner 2 or Surface Cleaner 3
Steel — Non-ImmersionSSPC-SP6 (Commercial Blast) · Profile: 1.0–1.5 mils angular
Steel — Immersion-BoundSSPC-SP10 (Near-White Blast) · Profile: 1.0–1.5 mils angular
Under High-Build TopcoatsIncrease blast profile to 1.5–2.5 mils for proper topcoat anchor

Substrate temperature must be above the dew point. Condensation below the dew point causes flash rusting on prepared steel and interferes with adhesion. Source: Carboline Carboweld 11 PDS (October 2024, doc 0241).

Welding Performance

Carboweld 11 is engineered to be welded through. Welds made over Carboweld 11 coated steel are equal in every respect to welds made to uncoated steel — with no loss in strength or consistency and no adhesion of weld spatter to the coating.

Automatic welding: up to 48 inches per minute when applied at recommended DFT, depending on plate thickness and bead size.

Compatible welding processes:

  • Submerged Arc
  • Flux Core
  • Short Arc
  • Metal Inert Gas (MIG)

Application method: Airless or conventional spray preferred. Brush for touch-up of areas under 1 sq ft only — avoid overbrushing. Do not apply by roller.

Good to Know Before You Buy

⚠️ Key Points for Buyers
  1. It's a weld-through primer, not a finish coat. Carboweld 11's purpose is to protect steel through fabrication and welding — welds made over it are equal to welds on bare steel, and it runs through automatic processes at up to 48"/min. That production-line weldability is the reason to choose it over a standard shop primer.
  2. Shop use only — built for the construction phase, not long-term exposure. It protects steel during normal construction timelines. For projects with extended outdoor exposure before topcoating, ask Carboline Technical Service about a longer-duration primer instead.
  3. Plan your topcoat around the service environment. Carboweld 11 can be topcoated for long-term atmospheric protection, but the right topcoat depends entirely on the end use (atmospheric, immersion, chemical, high-heat). Confirm the topcoat with Carboline before specifying.
  4. Order a full kit — partial kits won't perform. The two-part kit must be mixed complete to hit the correct zinc-to-binder ratio. A single 3-gallon kit covers up to ~650 ft² at recommended DFT, so plan your quantity accordingly.

Frequently Asked Questions — Carboweld 11

What is the coverage rate for Carboweld 11?
Carboweld 11 has a theoretical coverage of 657 ft²/gal at 0.7 mils DFT (16.1 m²/l at 17 microns). Recommended single-coat dry film thickness is 0.6–0.8 mils (15–20 microns). Thicknesses up to 1.5 mils (37 microns) are also acceptable. Practical yield is lower after mixing and application loss.
Can steel be welded through Carboweld 11?
Yes — Carboweld 11 is specifically engineered for welding. Welds made over coated steel are equal in every respect to welds made to uncoated steel with no loss in strength or consistency. Automatic welding speeds up to 48 inches per minute are achievable via submerged arc, flux core, short arc, and MIG processes. Weld spatter does not adhere to or damage the coating.
What is the mix ratio and pot life of Carboweld 11?
Carboweld 11 ships as a two-part kit. The 3-gallon kit contains one partially filled 5-gallon can of Part A (Base) plus a 14.6 lb (6.6 kg) unit of Part B (Zinc Filler Type II). Power mix the base, then sift the zinc filler slowly into the base under continuous agitation, and pour through a 30-mesh screen. Do not mix partial kits. Pot life is 48 hours at 75°F — shorter at higher temperatures.
How fast does Carboweld 11 dry?
Carboweld 11 dries to handle in 3–5 minutes under typical shop conditions. At 80°F: dry-to-handle in 5 minutes, final cure in 4 hours. At 40°F: dry-to-handle in 40 minutes, final cure in 12 hours. At 0°F: dry-to-handle in 2 hours, final cure in 5 days. In low-humidity shops, curing can be accelerated by misting the coated surface with steam or water after an initial 1-hour dry at 75°F.
Is Carboweld 11 Lloyds Register certified?
Yes. Carboweld 11 is certified as a pre-construction primer for Lloyds Register constructions. It is widely used in shipyards and structural steel fabrication shops for protecting plate and structural sections during the construction phase prior to welding and final topcoating.
What surface preparation is required before applying Carboweld 11?
Remove all oil and grease per SSPC-SP1 using Thinner 2 or Surface Cleaner 3. For non-immersion steel, blast to SSPC-SP6 (commercial blast) with a 1.0–1.5 mil angular surface profile. For immersion-bound substrates, blast to SSPC-SP10 (near-white). Where high-build topcoats will be applied, increase the blast profile to 1.5–2.5 mils. Substrate temperature must be above the dew point at time of application.
What topcoat should be used over Carboweld 11?
Carboweld 11 can be topcoated for additional long-term atmospheric protection. The appropriate topcoat depends entirely on the intended service environment — atmospheric, immersion, chemical, or high-temperature. Consult Carboline Technical Service for the specific topcoat recommendation for your project before specifying.
