Good to Know Before You Buy

⚠️ Pro Tips & Gotchas — 3-Component IOZ Primer

  1. 3-component system — do not mix partial kits. Carbozinc 11 HS requires all three components (Base, Zinc Filler, and Activator). It will not cure without the Activator. Always mix full kits only and pour through a 30-mesh screen to remove dry zinc lumps before application.
  2. No roller application. Roller is not permitted. Use conventional spray, airless spray, or brush only. Brush is for touch-up of areas under 1 sq ft only — avoid rebrushing.
  3. Low humidity extends cure time significantly. Below 50% RH, cure slows. Below 40% RH, allow a 2-hour ambient cure then mist with clean potable water or steam for a minimum of 8 hours to achieve proper cure. Minimum required humidity is 30% RH.
  4. Verify cure readiness before topcoating. The coating is ready to topcoat when it achieves a 2H pencil hardness per ASTM D3363 or a minimum rating of 4 per ASTM D4752. Remove any loose zinc (dry spray/overspray) with fiberglass or aluminum screen wire before topcoating.
  5. Cold-weather capable down to 15°F (–9°C). One of the lowest minimum application temperatures of any inorganic zinc primer. Suitable for winter application where other products cannot be used. Humidity requirements still apply.
  6. Weldable pre-construction primer at reduced DFT. Can be applied at 0.50–1.00 mils DFT as a weldable primer. Thin with Thinner 236E (starting at 10%, up to 30%) for this application. Consult Carboline Technical Service for guidance before use.
  7. Exceptional salt spray performance. 70,000 hours in ASTM B117 with no rusting or blistering and only slight rust in the scribe with no undercutting. This is among the strongest long-term corrosion resistance data published for any inorganic zinc primer.
  8. High-heat service without a topcoat. Rated to 750°F continuous / 800°F non-continuous without a topcoat. With compatible high-temperature topcoats, service temperatures extend to 1,000°F / 1,200°F. Consult Carboline for appropriate high-heat system selection.

Frequently Asked Questions — Carbozinc 11 HS

What is the coverage rate for Carbozinc 11 HS?
Carbozinc 11 HS covers 602 ft²/gal at 2 mils DFT and 401 ft²/gal at 3 mils DFT (theoretical, based on 75% volume solids). The recommended dry film thickness is 2–3 mils for standard applications. Allow for application loss — practical yield is typically 15–20% less than theoretical. For weldable pre-construction primer use, apply at 0.50–1.00 mils DFT.
What is the mix procedure for Carbozinc 11 HS?
Carbozinc 11 HS is a 3-component system. Power mix Part A (base) first, then slowly pour Part B (zinc filler) into Part A with continuous agitation until free of lumps. Then add Part C (activator) and mix for 2 more minutes. Pour through a 30-mesh screen. Do not mix partial kits — the product will not cure without the activator. Pot life is 8 hours at 75°F.
Does Carbozinc 11 HS require a mist coat before topcoating?
Under certain conditions, a mist coat may be required before applying the full topcoat to minimize bubbling. Carbozinc 11 HS may be topcoated with Waterborne Acrylics, Epoxies, Polyurethanes, High Temperature Silicones, and Armorlast Series inorganic silicate finishes. Consult Carboline Technical Service for your specific system and application conditions.
Can Carbozinc 11 HS be applied with a roller?
No. Roller application is not permitted for Carbozinc 11 HS. Rolling disrupts the zinc particle distribution and film structure, resulting in poor galvanic protection, non-uniform DFT, and potential adhesion failure. Use conventional spray, airless spray, or brush (brush for touch-up only).
How does Carbozinc 11 HS cure and what humidity is required?
Carbozinc 11 HS cures through reaction with atmospheric moisture. Minimum humidity is 30% RH; maximum is 95% RH. Humidity below 50% RH will slow cure. For RH below 40%, allow a 2-hour ambient cure then mist with clean potable water or steam for a minimum of 8 hours. The coating is ready to topcoat when it achieves 2H pencil hardness per ASTM D3363 or a minimum rating of 4 per ASTM D4752. Remove any loose zinc (dry spray/overspray) before topcoating.
How does Carbozinc 11 HS differ from standard Carbozinc 11?
Carbozinc 11 HS is a 3-component low-VOC inorganic zinc silicate with 84% zinc dust by weight in the dry film, 75% volume solids, and an ultra-low VOC of 2.4 lbs/gal. Key advantages over standard Carbozinc 11 include: 70,000-hour ASTM B117 salt spray performance, lower minimum application temperature (15°F vs. 0°F), weldable pre-construction primer capability, and a formulation meeting more stringent VOC restrictions. Standard Carbozinc 11 is a 2-component system with a different VOC and solids profile.
What performance tests has Carbozinc 11 HS passed?
Carbozinc 11 HS has been tested to AASHTO M300 (no blistering or rusting), ASTM B117 Salt Spray for 70,000 hours (no rusting or blistering; only slight rust in scribe, no creepage at scribe), ASTM A-325/A-490 (slip coefficient 0.58 — meets Class B rating for faying surfaces in bolted connections), and ASTM D3363 pencil hardness (3H).
Can Carbozinc 11 HS be used as a weldable pre-construction primer?
Yes. Carbozinc 11 HS can be applied at 0.50–1.00 mils DFT as a weldable pre-construction primer. For this application, thin with Thinner 236E starting at 10% and up to 30% to achieve the required lower film build. Consult Carboline Technical Service for guidance on weldable primer systems before proceeding.
