Mixing Instructions

Two-part kit: Part A (Liquid Resin) + Special Zinc Filler

Add the zinc filler to the liquid resin while continuously power mixing the liquid — not the other way around. Mix until uniform and pour through a 50-mesh screen. Do not mix partial kits.

Pot life: 6 hours at 75°F (24°C). Plan mix quantities to match your application rate. Thinning is possible with water at up to 8 fl oz per gallon if needed.

Surface Preparation

Carboweld 14 WB is designed for new structural steel in shop and yard applications. All surfaces must be clean and dry.

Step Requirement
DegreasingSolvent clean per SSPC-SP1 to remove all oil, grease, and contaminants
Blast CleaningNear-White Blast — SSPC-SP10 minimum with angular surface profile
TimingPrime bare steel the same day it is cleaned or before flash rusting occurs

Substrate temperature must be above the dew point. Condensation interferes with adhesion and causes flash rusting on prepared steel. Source: Carboline Carboweld 14 WB PDS (July 2018, doc 200F).

Protection & Performance

Carboweld 14 WB works like zinc-rich galvanizing — the 86% zinc dust in the film corrodes sacrificially, preventing rust from reaching the steel beneath. It also resists undercutting, so if the surface is scratched, corrosion doesn't spread under the coating.

Weldable pre-construction primer. Suitable for fabrication environments where weldability and corrosion protection are both required.

Application: Conventional spray is the recommended method. Airless spray, brushing, and rolling are not recommended.

Topcoats: Compatible with epoxies and others as recommended by your Carboline representative. Apply a mist coat of the topcoat before the full coat to minimize bubbling.

Good to Know Before You Buy

⚠️ Key Points for Buyers
  1. Zero VOC — the waterborne alternative when air quality or safety regulations matter. Carboweld 14 WB contains no solvent and has no flash point, making it the right choice for enclosed shops with ventilation limits, regulated fabrication facilities, or any project with strict VOC compliance requirements. Cleanup is warm soapy water.
  2. 86% zinc gives galvanizing-level cathodic protection. The high zinc content means the coating sacrifices itself to protect the steel, not just creating a barrier. Scratches and minor damage don't lead to spreading corrosion the way a barrier-only coating would.
  3. Pot life is 6 hours — shorter than solvent-based zinc primers. Mix only what you can apply within the working window. Leftover mixed material cannot be saved. Plan batch sizes accordingly to avoid waste.
  4. Must not freeze — in transit or storage. Unlike solvent-based primers, Carboweld 14 WB is permanently damaged by freezing. Store and ship above 40°F (4°C) at all times. This also sets the minimum application temperature.

Frequently Asked Questions — Carboweld 14 WB

What is the coverage rate for Carboweld 14 WB?
Carboweld 14 WB has a theoretical coverage of 1,002 ft²/gal at 1.0 mil DFT (24.6 m²/l at 25 microns). At a thinner 0.8 mil DFT it reaches 1,337 ft²/gal. Recommended single-coat DFT is 0.75–1.25 mils (19–32 microns). Allow for mixing and application loss in practice.
Is Carboweld 14 WB a zero-VOC product?
Yes — zero VOC, zero flash point, water-based formula. Carboweld 14 WB contains no solvents, making it suitable for environmentally regulated facilities and eliminating the fire risk associated with solvent-borne zinc primers. Equipment cleanup is done with warm soapy water.
How does Carboweld 14 WB protect steel?
Carboweld 14 WB provides cathodic sacrificial protection like galvanizing. The 86% zinc dust in the dry film corrodes preferentially to protect the underlying steel. It also offers excellent undercutting resistance, so corrosion does not spread beneath the coating if the surface is scratched or cut.
What is the pot life and how should I plan my batches?
Pot life is 6 hours at 75°F. This is significantly shorter than solvent-based zinc primers — mix only what you can apply within that window. Leftover mixed material cannot be recapped and saved. The 0.96-gal kit is the right choice for smaller jobs or crews where waste is a concern.
How fast does Carboweld 14 WB dry?
At 75°F (24°C): dry to handle in 12 minutes, ready for topcoat in 90 minutes. At 50°F: dry to handle 30 minutes, topcoat in 2 hours. At 95°F: dry to handle in just 30 seconds. Zinc must be thoroughly cured before any topcoat is applied.
What surface preparation is required?
Solvent clean per SSPC-SP1, then blast to Near-White Blast SSPC-SP10 minimum with an angular surface profile. Prime bare steel the same day it is cleaned — before any flash rusting occurs. Substrate temperature must be above the dew point at time of application.
What topcoats are compatible with Carboweld 14 WB?
Epoxies and other topcoats are compatible as recommended by your Carboline sales representative. The zinc must be thoroughly cured before topcoating. Always apply a mist coat of the topcoat first before the full coat to minimize bubbling.
What is the maximum service temperature for Carboweld 14 WB?
Carboweld 14 WB is rated to 750°F (399°C) in continuous dry service, making it well suited for structural steel in industrial, process, and marine environments where elevated temperatures are expected.
