Thinning & Cleanup

⚠️
Thinner 21 Required — Thin Only After Mixing

Carboweld 17 FG is a solvent-based, 2-component inorganic zinc. If thinning is required, add Thinner 21 only after combining Part A and Part B — up to 6% (7.7 oz/gal).

Do not pre-thin either component separately. Clean all equipment and spills immediately with Thinner 21. Moisture in equipment can cause gelation; ensure all lines are dry before use.

Mixing Instructions

Two-part kit: Part A (Base) + Part B (Activator) — 2:1 ratio by volume (B:A)

Mix each component separately with mechanical agitation first. Then pour Part B (activator) into Part A — not the other way around. Mix thoroughly under continuous mechanical agitation. Keep agitating throughout application to prevent zinc pigment from settling.

Pot life: 24 hours at 75°F / 50% RH. Less at higher temperatures or humidity. Do not mix more than can be applied within the pot life.

Surface Preparation

Carboweld 17 FG is designed for new structural steel in marine and industrial shop applications. All surfaces must be clean and dry.

Step Requirement
DegreasingSolvent clean per SSPC-SP1 to remove all oil, grease, and contaminants
Blast CleaningNear-White Blast — SSPC-SP10 with angular profile; 15–20% sharp angular abrasive recommended
Edge PrepRemove weld spatter; round sharp edges to minimum ¼” radius
TimingPrime bare steel before flash rusting occurs
RecoatingWhen overcoating with inorganic zinc materials, sweep blast between coats

Substrate temperature must be above the dew point. Condensation interferes with adhesion and causes flash rusting on prepared steel. Source: Carboline Carboweld 17 FG PDS (August 2023, doc 218F).

Protection & Performance

Carboweld 17 FG is the Carboweld series primer built for the demands of marine fabrication. Its ethyl silicate binder produces a hard, abrasion-resistant film that withstands the impacts of steel handling, grit blasting adjacent steel, and shipyard transit — where softer zinc primers fail.

Cathodic sacrificial protection corrodes the zinc coating preferentially, protecting the steel beneath. Excellent undercutting resistance means corrosion does not spread beneath the film if the surface is scratched during construction.

Certifications:

  • ABS Certified to IMO/PSPC standard for ballast tank linings
  • DNV-Tested (Det Norske Veritas)
  • Lloyd’s Register certified pre-construction primer

Limited immersion service (seawater) is acceptable — suitable for ballast tanks and marine hull areas per IMO/PSPC certification.

Application: Conventional spray or airless spray with continuous agitation. Brush for small touch-up areas only.

Good to Know Before You Buy

⚠️ Key Points for Buyers
  1. The marine-grade choice — ABS, DNV, and Lloyd’s Register certified. Carboweld 17 FG holds IMO/PSPC certification for ballast tank linings, tested by DNV and certified by ABS. If your project spec calls for IMO/PSPC compliance or Lloyd’s Register certification, this is the product. Carboweld 11 and 14 WB are not certified to this standard.
  2. Hard, abrasion-resistant film built for shipyard conditions. The ethyl silicate binder produces a harder film than potassium silicate or solvent-borne alternatives. It resists mechanical damage during steel handling, adjacent blasting operations, and transport on marine vessels — the typical abuse a shop primer faces on a shipbuilding project.
  3. Requires minimum 40% humidity to cure — will not cure in very dry conditions. Ethyl silicate cures via atmospheric moisture. Below 40% RH the film will not cure properly. This is the opposite concern from most coatings — plan application for adequate humidity, not just adequate temperature.
  4. Final cure takes 7 days regardless of temperature. Dry to handle is fast (5–10 minutes), but full mechanical and chemical cure requires 7 days at all temperatures. Factor this into project scheduling for topcoating, ballast tank flooding, or structural loading.

Frequently Asked Questions — Carboweld 17 FG

What certifications does Carboweld 17 FG hold?
Carboweld 17 FG carries the most comprehensive marine coating certifications available: ABS-certified to the IMO/PSPC standard for ballast tank linings, DNV-tested (Det Norske Veritas), and certified as a pre-construction primer for Lloyd’s Register constructions. These make it the appropriate choice for marine vessels, offshore platforms, and any project where these certifications are specified.
What is the coverage rate for Carboweld 17 FG?
Carboweld 17 FG has a theoretical coverage of 738 ft²/gal at 0.5 mils DFT and 369 ft²/gal at 1.0 mil DFT. Recommended single-coat DFT is 0.5–1.0 mils (13–25 microns). Solids by volume are 23%, which is lower than other zinc primers — allow for mixing and application loss in practice.
How fast does Carboweld 17 FG dry?
Carboweld 17 FG dries to handle in 10 minutes at 77°F (25°C), 7 minutes at 100°F, and 5 minutes at 120°F. However, final cure is 7 days at all temperatures. The fast dry-to-handle time supports shop throughput, but the 7-day final cure must be factored into scheduling for topcoating or service.
What is the mix ratio and how do I mix Carboweld 17 FG?
The mix ratio is 2 parts Part B (activator) to 1 part Part A by volume. The 5-gallon kit contains 1.65 gal Part A and 3.35 gal Part B. Mix each component separately with mechanical agitation first, then pour Part B into Part A (not the reverse). Agitate continuously throughout application. Pot life is 24 hours at 75°F / 50% RH — less at higher temperatures or humidity.
Does Carboweld 17 FG require a minimum humidity to cure?
Yes — minimum 40% relative humidity is required. Carboweld 17 FG is an ethyl silicate product that cures via atmospheric moisture. In very dry environments (below 40% RH), the film will not cure properly. Maximum humidity is 90% RH. This is an important planning consideration for enclosed shops with low humidity in winter months.
What surface preparation is required for Carboweld 17 FG?
Solvent clean per SSPC-SP1, then abrasive blast to Near-White cleanliness SSPC-SP10 with an angular surface profile (15–20% sharp angular abrasive recommended). Remove weld spatter and round sharp edges to a minimum ¼” radius. Prime bare steel before flash rusting occurs. When recoating with inorganic zinc materials, sweep blast between coats.
Can Carboweld 17 FG be used in immersion or ballast tank service?
Yes — Carboweld 17 FG is approved for limited immersion service such as seawater. Its ABS certification to the IMO/PSPC standard for ballast tank linings means it can be specified for ballast tanks, marine hull areas, and offshore structures where seawater exposure is anticipated.
What topcoats are compatible with Carboweld 17 FG?
Acrylics or epoxies are compatible depending on the exposure and service environment. Always apply a mist coat of the topcoat first before the full coat to minimize bubbling and cratering. Consult Carboline Technical Service for specific topcoat recommendations for your service environment.
