Thinner 236 E Spray or brush/roller — preferred when VOC compliance is required 10% (13 oz/gal) Maintains 90 g/l — stays below 100 g/l limit
Thinner 10 Spray or brush/roller — only when higher VOC is acceptable 8% (10 oz/gal) Raises VOC to 148 g/l — exceeds 100 g/l limit
Thinner 2, Thinner 225 E, or Acetone Cleanup only — —

Thinning is not normally required for Carboxane 2100 BR — this is a high-solids (85% by volume) coating. When thinning is needed, Thinner 236 E is the preferred choice to maintain VOC compliance below 100 g/l. Thinner 10 is only acceptable where a higher VOC is permitted by local regulations. Use of unauthorized thinners may adversely affect film performance. Source: Carboline Carboxane 2100 BR PDS (August 2022, doc 1358).

Recommended Coating Systems

Single-Coat Direct-to-Metal (DTM) System ★ Signature System

Carboxane 2100 BR's most efficient system — apply in one coat at 5 mils minimum DFT directly over properly blasted steel (SSPC-SP6, 1.5–2.5 mil profile). Delivers ISO 12944-6 C3 High and C4 Medium corrosion protection with full bio-resistance in a single pass. Reduces application time, labor, and cost significantly vs. conventional 2–3 coat systems.

Single Coat — DTM Carboxane 2100 BR 5 mils DFT minimum · SSPC-SP6 surface prep · ISO 12944 C3 High / C4 Medium
Two-Coat System — Epoxy Primer + Bio-Resistant Topcoat

When improved corrosion protection beyond C4 is required, or when the substrate warrants a dedicated primer, pair Carboxane 2100 BR over an approved epoxy primer at a minimum of 5 mils DFT finish coat. Also the recommended approach when applying over previously coated surfaces that have been properly prepared — eliminating costly full removal.

→
Topcoat Carboxane 2100 BR 5 mils DFT minimum · gloss bio-resistant finish
Two-Coat System — Zinc-Rich Primer + Bio-Resistant Topcoat

For maximum corrosion protection in C4 and above exposures, apply Carboxane 2100 BR over an inorganic or organic zinc-rich primer. Compatible with both per the PDS. Minimum 5 mils DFT finish coat delivers cathodic zinc protection plus full bio-resistance and weathering performance of the siloxane hybrid topcoat.

Good to Know Before You Buy

⚠️ Application Notes & Pro Tips
  1. Power mix for a minimum of 3 minutes after combining parts. Power mix Part A and Part B separately before combining, then combine and power mix together for at least 3 minutes. Incomplete mixing compromises cure, film integrity, and bio-resistance performance. Do not mix partial kits.
  2. Bio-resistance requires correct DFT — minimum 5 mils for DTM and 2-coat systems. The fungal growth inhibition chemistry is built into the cured film. Insufficient film thickness can reduce effectiveness. Minimum 3 mils is acceptable only as the finish coat in a full 3-coat system.
  3. Part B shelf life is only 12 months — check the date. Part A lasts 24 months; Part B (Carboxane 2100 FC Part B) has a shorter 12-month shelf life. Always verify the Part B date before mixing on long-stored inventory.
  4. Maximum recoat window is 30 days. After 30 days, the surface must be deglossed by abrasive blasting or sanding before recoating. Factor this into sequencing on large or multi-phase projects.
  5. Thinner 236E maintains the <100 g/l VOC when thinning. Only Thinner 236E (up to 10%, 13 oz/gal) keeps VOC at 90 g/l. Thinning with Thinner 10 raises VOC to 148 g/l — only acceptable where higher limits apply. Thinning is not normally required for this high-solids coating.
  6. Minimum 20% RH required for cure. Unlike most topcoats with no lower humidity floor, Carboxane 2100 BR requires at least 20% relative humidity. Application in very dry conditions inhibits cure. Low humidity above 20% RH also extends cure times.
  7. 5-hour pot life at 75°F — monitor for skinning in open pots. Material is moisture sensitive. If the pot is left uncovered for extended periods or in high humidity conditions, check for and remove any skinned material before continuing application.
  8. Force cure at 140°F achieves handle in 30 minutes. When turnaround time is critical (shutdown windows, maintenance outages), force curing at 140°F dramatically accelerates the schedule.
  9. Can be applied over many existing, properly prepared coatings. Carboxane 2100 BR can be used for maintenance repaints over compatible existing coatings — eliminating full removal and saving significant time and money on existing infrastructure.
  10. Brush and roller require multiple coats to achieve DFT. Airless spray is the preferred production application method. Multiple coats are typically required via brush or roller to reach the 5–7 mil recommended DFT for DTM and 2-coat systems.

Frequently Asked Questions — Carboxane 2100 BR

What is Carboxane 2100 BR and what makes it different from a standard topcoat?
Carboxane 2100 BR is a fungal resistant modified siloxane hybrid — not a polyurethane. It is isocyanate-free and contains bio-active chemistry that exhibits pronounced growth inhibition against baudoinia and a broad spectrum of other bacteria and fungi. At 85% solids by volume and less than 100 g/l VOC, it delivers significantly better coverage and lower environmental impact than conventional topcoats, while meeting SSPC Paint 36 Level 3A weathering and ISO 12944 C4 Medium corrosion ratings.
What is baudoinia and why does Carboxane 2100 BR resist it?
Baudoinia is an unsightly black fungal growth that thrives in environments with ethanol and alcohol vapors — distilleries, wineries, ethanol storage tanks, and bakeries are common affected sites. The spores are extremely difficult to remove and grow back repeatedly after cleaning. Carboxane 2100 BR is specifically formulated to exhibit pronounced growth inhibition against baudoinia and a broad spectrum of other bacteria and fungi. Field testing on an ethanol storage tank showed the Carboxane 2100 BR area remained visibly clean for over 2.5 years compared to surrounding areas coated with conventional products.
Can Carboxane 2100 BR be applied direct to metal (DTM)?
Yes — Carboxane 2100 BR can be applied direct to metal for exposures classified C1–C4 (urban to light industrial) per ISO 12944. Prepare the surface to SSPC-SP6 with a 1.5–2.5 mil angular surface profile. A minimum of 5 mils DFT is recommended for single-coat DTM. It meets ISO 12944-6 C3 High and C4 Medium ratings applied as a single coat DTM. For more severe exposures, apply over an approved primer.
What is the mix ratio and how do I mix Carboxane 2100 BR?
Carboxane 2100 BR uses a 4:1 mix ratio by volume — 4 parts Part A to 1 part Part B (Carboxane 2100 FC Part B). Power mix each component separately first, then combine and power mix together for at least 3 minutes to ensure thorough mixing. Do not mix partial kits. Pot life is 5 hours at 75°F (23°C), shorter at higher temperatures. Material is moisture sensitive — check for and remove any skinning before use.
What is the maximum recoat window?
The maximum recoat window for Carboxane 2100 BR is 30 days. After this period, degloss the surface by abrasive blasting or sanding prior to recoating to ensure proper adhesion. Plan your project schedule accordingly on large or multi-phase work.
What VOC level does Carboxane 2100 BR meet?
Carboxane 2100 BR contains less than 100 g/l VOC as mixed — specifically 0.75 lbs/gal (90 g/l) per EPA Method 24 as supplied mixed. Thinning with Thinner 236E at 10 oz/gal maintains the 90 g/l VOC level. Thinning with Thinner 10 at 10 oz/gal raises VOC to 148 g/l, which is only acceptable where higher VOC limits apply. The product contains US EPA VOC-exempt solvents.
What temperature and humidity conditions are required?
Material temp: 50–90°F · Surface temp: 35–110°F · Ambient temp: 35–110°F · Humidity: 20–90% RH. Substrate temperature must be at least 5°F above the dew point. The 20% minimum humidity is important — very dry conditions inhibit cure. Application or curing above 90% RH or exposure to rain or dew before cure may result in gloss loss and staining. Force curing at up to 140°F is permitted when schedule requires, achieving dry-to-handle in 30 minutes.
