Carboline Coatings — Frequently Asked Questions

Which Carboline coating is best for new structural steel in atmospheric service?

A typical system is an inorganic zinc primer like Carbozinc 11 or Carbozinc 11 HS, an epoxy intermediate such as Carboguard 890 or Carboguard 893, and a polyurethane topcoat like Carbothane 134 HG or Carbothane 133 HB. For severe UV exposure or where color retention is critical, Carboxane 2000 (modified siloxane) replaces the urethane with extended performance.

What Carboline coatings are NSF 61 certified for potable water?

Hydroplate 1080 and Hydroplate 1086 are both NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 and 600 certified for potable water tanks and pipe. Hydroplate 1080 is a modified phenalkamine epoxy that applies up to 20 mils in one coat and cures to 20°F. Hydroplate 1086 is an 86%-solids advanced polyamine epoxy that cures down to 35°F and conforms to AWWA C210.

Which Carboline product is best for corrosion under insulation (CUI)?

Thermaline Heat Shield is the premier CUI coating, handling cryogenic (-321°F) through 1200°F service and meeting NACE SP0198 CS-6 and SS-5. For chemically aggressive CUI environments up to 450°F, Thermaline 450 (glass-flake novolac epoxy) is appropriate. For moderate-heat CUI under 300°F, Carbomastic 15 or Carboguard 890 can be used.

What is the best Carboline coating for rusted or minimally prepared steel?

For surface-tolerant applications, Carbomastic 15 (aluminum-pigmented epoxy mastic) and Carbomastic 615 (phenalkamine mastic with MIO flakes) are the two leading choices. Both bond to SSPC-SP2/SP3 prepared steel, tight rust, and existing coatings. Carbomastic 615 also cures over damp surfaces and down to 20°F. Rustbond Primer Sealer is the go-to tie-coat for out-of-window recoats and mixed substrates.

Are Carboline products available for cold-weather application?

Several Carboline products cure at low temperatures. Carbozinc 11 HS cures down to 15°F. Carboguard 690, Carbomastic 615, Hydroplate 1080, and Carboguard 635 VOC cure to 20°F. Carboguard 893, Carbothane 133 LV, and Hydroplate 1086 cure to 35°F. For temperatures outside these windows, Carboline Additive 8505 is available — contact us at (800) 567-5358 for cold-weather application guidance.

What thinners go with which Carboline coatings?

Thinner No. 10 is used with Bitumastic 300M, Carbomastic 15, and the Thermaline series. Thinner No. 2 (MEK/toluene blend) is used with Carboguard 890, Carboguard 60, Carboguard 635, Carboguard 690, Carbomastic 615, and Carbozinc 859 — and serves as a tool cleanup solvent. Thinner No. 25 is specifically for Carbothane 134 HG. Thinner No. 33 is used with Carbozinc 11, Carbozinc 11 HS, Carbozinc 859, and most Carboguard epoxies. Always check the product data sheet for the approved thinner and maximum thinning rate.
